Isaiah B:
I thought Coltrane came close to mastery. I thought he did a really good job of showing me how he truly felt about learning and was very honest. I think that a lot of times people can end up just doing the same old presentation but I think Coltrane’s was better because of his delivery and also his content. I thought mine compared good against mastery. I think that I did a good job of explaining my story and I stuck to it. I also think I did good job with my delivery. I don’t think I stumbled that much and when I did think I didn’t make it to noticeable. I also think I did a good job with my content because I kept everything concise and also kept my artifacts nice. That was key in order to have a good presentation was the artifacts because they justified what you had said and if you didn’t have good ones then it was all a waste. I think some areas that I could have improved upon were my aesthetics. I think my slideshow was clean but could have been a little more nicer. For example, I think my slideshow could have had some more transitions to go along so it wasn’t just boring. I also think I should have kept my talking to a little less because I barely made it. I think I could have answered my questions a little better because I feel that I got stumped on some of them. For example, when asked about my learning and how I would react to an IB teacher questioning me I didn’t answer that to well. I think that my artifacts helped a ton with my PoL because it made me be able to check back and refer to them if someone questioned what I had learned.
Malia:
Comparing my PoL to my peers I think I hit target. I believe I hit target because I bought that I was prepared and I was ready to give my speech. I thought that I was detailed enough and I gave good explanation in my speech. I thought that my slideshow was creative/detailed enough to help explain my reasonings. As I watched my peers presentations I think that most of them hit mastery, just because there speeches were way much better than mines and they had better artifacts. Then on the other hand some hit target too. I think that Coltrane, Nikki, Austin, Kai, Bobby, and Krislyn hit mastery. They all hit mastery because they all had great artifacts, they slides were very creative and they all had a well prepared speech, not just reading off the board the whole time. I think that mins compares to the ones that hit mastery because some of them had a speech like mines were it kinds reading off the board then you add on. But then on the other had Bobby had a very good presentation were hi slideshow only had pictures, and he he had note cards with his speech on there and he just explained everything from there. Some strengths of my presentation maybe were my speech. I felt that it was well prepared enough to we’re i didn’t have to stop and think and stumble. Another strength was my artifacts I used, I thought that explaining how my first artifact was a fail, then my second got better, then my third artifacts hit mastery and was successful was a good way of telling how I got better throughout the year. Some parts I would still like to work on his having confidence when speaking in front of a audience. I think next time I should add pictures too, but I just didn’t have any for none of my artifacts. Some things I wished I have said was how MPX helped me to get ready for Junior and Senior year, because in junior and senior year you don’t really have a lot of worksheets and test, you have a lot of papers and essays to get you ready for college. I though that I answered that questions okay. I could’ve been more specific. I was kinda scared when it came to questions, so I could’ve thought more not just spit stuff out, but for my second PoL o thought it was okay. My answers were pretty specific, I thought I answered it well but still could’ve thought more. I thought that I used the artifacts well. As said earlier when I mention how my first artifacts was a fail, the the second became better, then the thirds hit master, I think that really helped me learn my getting better through the year, and I learned a lot from fails and succeeding.
Nikki:
I think that Coltrane and Bradley are a good example of mastery. They both seemed very confident when they were talking and spoke clearly. I think that is something that many people struggled with including me. They had an excellent story from beginning to the end with good examples of artifacts, and they had good aesthetics with not many words. I think that Coltrane took an extra step by talking about his past and background in depth. He made me really interested into hearing the rest of his story. I don’t think that my speech was mastery. I think that most of it was target because I used many artifacts, spoke clearly, and had good aesthetics. My presentation was lacking the emotion and confidence that Coltrane and Bradley had. My strength were mainly in aesthetics and possibly content. This is because I had many examples of how I felt that I improved throughout the year, plus I had many pictures and a limited amount of words. I still need to work on my communication skills because I did not use much hand motions. I was moving may hands a lot in the back of me which may have distracted others. I was trying to become less nervous by moving my hands.
Looking back at how I answered questions, I feel like I should have changed my response from one or two of the questions. When asked what major change I could make for the program next year, I replied saying that we should change the first project. I think that I could have thought about that question longer. Most people said we should change the first project but I wish I replied how we could change it to make it better. When I answered the thought questions, I tried to give an extended response rather than just saying yes or no, I think I answered most questions well. I explained as much as I could to clarify my answer. I did use some of my artifacts to answer the questions such as the aquaponics project to show what I accomplished.
Caelin:
Looking at some of the POL’s I do think that some people prepared a little more than others. I believe that Krislyn’s POL hit target because the first thing I noticed was she talked very quiet, but that might have been the poor quality of the video camera. Another thing I noticed right away was that while she was presenting she fiddled quite a bit with her clothes, and made awkward hand motions. This at first through me off and I didn’t think that the presentation was going to be very good but after she goes into her first topic you could tell she was well rehearsed and prepared a over all it was a good presentation. When Krislyn talked about the worm bin project and how the leader of the group was absent so she had to step up and get the work done, I really liked how that showed how she started as a follower and had to become the leader. I do believe that when she was presenting this she could have talked less per slide or add more slides per topic because after a while the audience gets kinda bored if their looking at the same thing for more than 1 minute. Going from this into the Aquaponics project I believe that it really showed how the worm bin project changed her because she had to keep the group on task and actually get things done. When presenting this topic I do believe she goes a little to much into detail about the aquaponics itself and I think she should have talked a little less about the project than she did. Krislyn’s POL didn’t show that there was a story until the very end when she brought up the then and now but over all the presentation was very well done. The questions that she received, she answered them while staying on the topic and getting to the point.
After reviewing Krislyn’s POL and then watching mine I realized that their are certain aspects of both presentations that were better and or worse than the others. I believe that my POL hit target because what I noticed right away was first I have awkward hand movement, I say umm a lot, and I sway when I’m talking. I think that I did pretty well in telling a story because I stared with saying the original problem when coming into MPX and giving examples and how I’ve changed than bringing back up the story and stating how I changed. I do believe that I overstated the topic and what it was because I tried to explain it in three different ways. Going into the different examples I didn’t look very prepared because I had a hard time explaining the projects and how they helped me find what I was interested in. After the topics I brought up how I’ve changed from then and now and I had a hard time describing what I was trying to say. From that I went into how MPX has prepared for my future and why it’s really a lot better than pre-IB and how it helps for me next year since I will be going into homeschool. When answering questions I do believe I stayed on topic and got to the point right away but I think I could have gone a little more into detail. Over all I think the presentation was pretty good because it didn’t show the same slide for more than about 30 seconds, but it was still easy to follow, I didn’t use many words so I think that was good and I believe that I presented it well.
I think the strengths of my presentation was the Prezi itself because it was easy to follow and interesting. The weaknesses of the presentation was me talking and actually presenting it, I believe that I could have prepared more and stopped swaying. I really believe that the artifacts that I used made my “case” because my main topic was finding my interest and the three artifacts all lead up and used my new found interest in advertisement.
Josh N:
So after watching Coltrane’s video and my own I have seen a lot of good presenting but there where some mistakes in both. So to start with comparing them I think that Coltrane’s was like mine because we both used mostly photos in our presentation and not a lot of words and that we both we talked about ourselves and how we have learned except that Coltrane’s was a bit more in depth than mine. Now to contrast them, I think that Coltrane’s was much more scripted than mine and also that Coltrane went much further back into his life than I did in my presentation. I think that Coltrane’s presentation came closer to mastery but not by a lot which surprised me. the reason that I say that he did not beat me by much was because his presentation was much to scripted and he was looking at his script way to much and other than that I think that everything else either hit target or mastery. The way that my presentation compares to mastery is not suer good. The reasoning for that is because I think that my story could have been better, my communication could have been much better because I said way to many “ums”, and the main reason that I did not hit mastery was because I did not present for the whole six minutes, my presentation was only about four minutes. Some strengths of my presentation was the aesthetics of the presentation, and the story was not that bad. Some areas I still need to work on is the communication, speaking (leanth), and the content. I think that I wish that I talked more about what I improved on during this year and also more about my story through out my presentation. I think that the questions that I answered where decently answered and they where not super specific. Although I think that they where okay. I think that the artifacts that I picked represented my point very well because they all related to the same point.
Bradley:
My final POL presentation this year has taken my a long time to do. it has not only taken me the time to prepare the slides and the script but really it took me the entire year. I say this because I did not use my script that much. I did not feel that it was necessary to because I thought about all of this though out the year and all I had to do is regurgitate the things I have been thinking of all year. And because of this I think that my presentation stood up really well too some of the better presentations like Bryson’s and Coltrane’s. Bryson had the best time line and he integrated his artifacts better then anyone. My presentation I think almost beat Bryson’s timeline because I incorporated it in to a story. this does not mean I incorporated the artifacts better and that was the one thing that I had the most trouble with because of my complicated story. I think that if I were to fix that one thing then I would hit mastery in every thing.
while my presentation was missing a few things my Questioning and question answering was spot on. I asked the question that were not addressed and if i could not do that then I asked thing that would maybe give them an idea. Like I asked Kris do you think that your creativity helped you in math. This was not a real question it was just a subtle way to put you should use your drawing skills in everything. Now when people were asking me questions I answered them perfectly in my eyes. I don’t see how I could have answered them more perfectly every thing that I wanted to say fit in and I even incorporated an artifact in to a answer. over all I think that this was the best presentation that I ever gave and I will apply this to future presentations and essays.
Austin:
I think that compared to how we were at the beginning of the year, most of our presentations have hit mastery. Everyone has improved in some way; wether it be volume, story telling or just general speech. I do believe that I’ve improved with my story telling, however I do have a habit of saying “um” a lot. It’s a habit that I actually don’t really notice, but it is quite obvious when I listen back to myself. I think my weakest links were my “um”s and staying within the time limit. I had nine minutes of speech, although I’ve been told that it progressed well. I thought that it would be significantly shorter, as I did cut out a lot of what I was going to say. I think that I wish I had talked more about MPX, instead of explaining my whole life. I do believe it was relevant, but I think a lot of it could’ve been cut out. I only really addressed the thought question towards the end, when I talked about what I had accomplished, and what I’d like to do. I thought that I could’ve probably used more artifacts, but I was proud of my story. I thought that I didn’t need any artifacts because it was so well written. My biggest flaw with writing and other things is how overly confident I am. I always believe that it’ll be the best thing, until I look at it after preforming or publishing it. There is a lot that I can learn from this POL, and much to be taken from it. My speech, presence and pacing will all be important factors. How much I can cram into eight minutes will also be something that I will need to focus on. I will ramble on too much, and my thoughts begin to get disorganized. MPX is something that I feels helps me, and I look forward to next year.
Emma:
I think that the three people who became closest to mastery in my opinion were Kai Wilsing, Nicole Stacey, and Krislyn Miyagawa. Kai because in his presentation he really told an actual story in the video. He used clips from previous life events that would eventually show his growth throughout the MPX program. He presented really well and only used his note cards for little things and didn’t over use them or stare at them for to long. Nikki because here presentation was full of great information that told her story and she used good artifacts that told the story. When she presented she was very confident and didn’t memorize but knew her story well so that when she presented she would seem more confident. Krislyn because her story was really really good. She chose something that we could relate to or understand really easily, that was different then everyone elses.
My presentation compared to those who hit mastery i think would be in between mastery and target. I think this because when i spoke my voice was loud enough and i don’t think that i sounded confident enough when I was speaking. Where the other people who i believe hit mastery sounded very confident and were really into what they were saying. But other then that i think that my story was pretty good and made sense and told a good story that was my own. As well my slides were very nice and aesthetically pleasing so that mu images and words on the slides would help everyone to understand my story better.
Areas that i think i did good with was the actual content of my story that i was presenting, because i had a clear story to share with the people. As well as my aesthetics side of my presentation was really nice and i showed everything i could in the nicest way i could think of. As well with the amount of words and pictures on each slide of my keynote i tried to keep it so that there were barely any words but only about one word per bullet point. So that when the audience is looking at it they mainly only glance at the words then take time to look at the pictures. Things i could have improved on were things just like my speech and talking more confidently throughout my presentation. As stated above.
Bryson:
The two people I thought met all the requirements and more, to get mastery, was Coltrane and Bradley. Both of these students had a nice story, good content to go with the story, they conveyed their story in a proper way, and all of their slides displayed the message they were trying to convey successfully.
Coltrane and Bradley’s story were both very different from each other, but they were both very powerful in proving how they changed as a learner. For Bradley, his story was outlined around the design process and how he had to go through the cycle multiple times to be the person he is today. I really liked how he never directly said he went through the design process, but while doing the projects that he did, allowed him to go through his transformation. The thing that stood out the most was how he started with a quote that relayed all throughout his presentation. A strong beginning and a strong ending is all he needed to be very successful. All of Bradley’s content was how his designing related to how he changed with getting the skills he will need to survive and follow your dreams. For communication, everyone knows Bradley has a lisp, but even with the lisp he was easy to understand and he never let that one thing hold him back. I think the one thing that puts Bradley ahead of most of us was his slides. I think that he took time to really let both his speech and his slides tell the story.
The reason I chose Coltrane and Bradley for the mastery was because each of these presentations displayed mastery in different categories. For Bradley I would say his story and aesthetics was mastery. Where as for coltrane his story, content, and delivery was really effective. Coltrane’s story was how he didn’t want to run his life under anyone else’s power. He explained how he would do what he believed was right, even if it was wrong. Using this story he explained how he was plagued in his previous educational carrier and how it led him into being a minimalist who would just do the work and pass. I really enjoyed how he would explain how at one point in his life HE decided to make the change for him so that he can be successful later in his life. HE decided to take charge of his future and wouldn’t let anyone tell him otherwise.
Looking back to my presentation and comparing it to theirs, I would say I am in the same ball park for being successful. I believe that bradley had a much stronger than me, but I can’t do anything on that. Like I said in my presentation “You dictate your own success”, and with that I believe my story shows how I changed as a learner. I think Coltrane had a much better presentation compared to mines. I feel like I left out a lot of important details and I could have gone into much greater detail than I did. For content, I believe that you can’t really compare people’s content because what they want to say in their presentation is what they want to say on how they changed, let it be for the better or the worse. Now that I think about it, I don’t want to compare other people to me because that would make me want to be like them. I feel like my presentation could have been a little better, but all I can do now is learn from those few mistakes and not let them happen again.
Kainoa:
To me I felt like Kryslin’s Pol was mastery. She had good posture and spoke clearly. I felt like my presentation I was nervous but then I got comfortable and started speaking better with more confidence. Kryslin also had lots of good information while not having many words on a slide. I felt like I had to use more words to explain my self because I was not as good at conveying my ideas without using lots of words. Kryslin also kept me interested in what she was talking about. I felt like while i was watching other people pol i got bored easily and with Kryslin i felt interested in what she was saying and i was not bored. with my pol i felt like i was bored in the first 2 minutes so i have to work on that. Kryslin also had a very good story, she had a clear beginning and she explained how she overcame the tasks. I felt like in my pol i did a good job on the story. I felt like i provided how i was before and how if i thought of school like soccer i would be able to enjoy school better. The aesthetics of Kryslin’s slides were also very nice. she organized her slides and did not have too many words on a slide. All of her slides related to what she was talking about and i thought she did very good job on that. With my Pol i felt like i did a good job on my organization. I think i had too many words on my slides but other than that i think i did a good job on relating my slides to what i was talking about. I think overall i met target on my project. I think this because i didn’t do good on some topics but i think i met target or mastery on other slides.
Noah S:
From all the presentations I’ve watched I realize that Coltrane’s was closest mastery. All of the metaphors he use and all the examples that he used really made a connection with himself and showed his feelings towards the program, toward school, towards the rules, it showed what he really viewed, and what he expressed in real life. The words he used and the way he expressed them really drove his entire presentation. He read off a script which I didn’t really like but from the way he wrote it and everything he said, it really caught my attention. He had the biggest applause at the end of this presentation, this was because he deserve it. Also his presentation did connect to him personally but it also connected to the audience, a lot of the kids in MPX to get in trouble a lot and Coltrane showed his regards to the rules and the way he felt against them. He gave an eye-opener to most of the kids in the program. I think this is what I really liked most about his presentation, the connection with the audience. when I looked at other presentations a lot of people did not do this. They ether didn’t think it was necessary or whatever reason they chose but I didn’t see it when they presented.
Personally I did not like my presentation I thought some of things I said were unnecessary and not need to be there but when I got down I had a big applause and I asked Coltrane what he thought about it, he said he really liked mine better than his. Maybe it’s just because you don’t really like your work or you don’t feel like you hit mastery in any way possible, Whatever the reason was or is, we both got compliments on both representations, both presentations were said to be strong and both felt like the drive was lost. I think what I didn’t like about mine was that I lost my driving and I became distracted and I lost what I was saying and everything I was doing and that made my presentation a lot worse.
I felt like the questions that I got asked and I asked were really meaningful and helped to explain what I was trying to say, The questions I received were not directed at my presentation but at my previous work in eighth-grade and standard base learning. I feel like the use of my artifacts really helped illustrate everything that I was trying to prove and also helped demonstrate my progress throughout the year.
Josh M:
I felt that krislyn’s was mastery. I felt this way because she identified a problem that was wrong with her learning. Her problem was she was self conscious she felt as if people were going to shot down her ideas and that people would make fun of her ideas. She felt that Mpx gave her confidence to share her ideas and to think out of the box. She felt like she could be a leader she learned how to take charge and contribute well to a group and make a difference. In her presentation she gave many examples of how she used her new leadership skills and how she started to overcome her long lasting problem. She had a well defined story she told us how she was before mpx and how she had changed. During her presentation she was very clear and she talked as if she had practiced her speech 1000 times. She talked with confidence and she got her point across really well. She never stumbled or said umm she knew what was coming up next. She stayed in the 6-8 minute range was very well prepared her slides had good pictures that had to what she was saying. Overall I felt that her presentation hit mastery. How mine compared to hers was pretty good. I had a very good story I had how I was before mpx and I had how I changed as a learner during mpx. I also had what I liked and I related the things that I liked to a job that I want in the future due to all the things I like in life. I had my artifacts and I used examples during the year to back up my artifacts. The one thing that I needed to work on knowing what was coming up next so I don’t have to look at the board and know what to say next. I think this came up with the lack of practice. I stayed within the 6-8 range I needed alittle more rehearsal but my pictures were good and they had to do with what I was saying. I related the artifacts to me and what I liked. I also used the artifacts to tell what type of job I would like in the future. Over all I felt like my presentation was all mastery expect for a few things such as preparation and knowing my script, but I felt like I did everything else right.
Blaine:
My presentation was a lot like Isaiah Palmero’s. I felt like Isaiah used a lot of examples and details. That was one thing I focused on and I felt like I did well. I think Isaiah was really good at that. I feel like me and Isaiah spoke loud and clear and you can understand us. One thing I had that I thought Isaiah didn’t was a theme. My theme was my road to success. He didn’t have a good theme but I felt like his story was good. The person I thought hit mastery in our class because she spoke loud and clear with a lot of examples and details. She did a good job saying her story. Everything just flowed and it was a good performance all around. One thing she could of done better was not play with her hands as much. I did the same thing. In fact I thought I was worst. I think I my examples fitting into the story was good like Emma’s. I think I explained it well enough for people to understand. I think krislyns presentation also hit mastery. She did a really good job talking and she related her personal life to MPX. She talked about how MPX made her more competitive and if she lost, she wouldn’t be as hard on her self. I thought she used good examples and explained it well. I couldn’t find anything to compare myself to krislyn because it was really good. I thought the good thing about my presentation is that I had a theme. I think my theme set me up for my conclusion and I could keep referring to it after every artifact I said. I think I did a good job explaining all my artifacts. The one artifact I didn’t explain well but I wanted to was the Iliad. I wanted to but I guess I blanked out. If I was to give myself a grade, I would give myself a B. I need to work on my presents up there. My arms are moving a lot and I look nervous. I didn’t feel nervous up there but I looked nervous. I guess it’s natural for me. The one thing I wanted to say was what I thought about the iliad and talk about more on how I thought I improved. I only spent talking about that for about 20 seconds so I should of explained more. I thought I answered my questions well. When Mr. Kaneko asked me a question I felt like I answered it without stumbling and I explained my answer well. I feel like I used my artifacts well to explain how I was successful. I used a crapy artifact and a good one for my Humanities class and 2 for my Stem. I explained well and ended with explaining what I think success is.
Coltrane:
Kai’s presentation hit mastery not by strictly following the criteria, but by truly presenting real information about him, and showing how Mpx made his life better. Although unnecessary, the background that he gave about himself set the stage perfectly for a shocking exposé on how after Mpx, he’s changed as a learner. He addressed how at times he had problems, at times he had doubts, yet he was able to work through it and become the “new and improved Kai wilding.” Being a theater kid, Kai had a very good grasp of speech and could enrapture an audience through his tones and expressions. This showed mastery in most all aspects, and ultimately made his case. His slides were phenomenal and enhanced the presentation to a very high degree. Overall, Kai’s presentation was near perfect; the only thing I would change in it would be if he continued his beginning theme throughout, and didn’t bluntly state the artifacts. Mine on the other hand was delivered shakily, and scripted. I thought my content and words were quite good, but the way that I presented, coupled with the fact my script’s size was obtrusive, diminished the impact of my speech. Even though my presentation may not have been the caliber that I wanted it to be at, I am still proud of it. To me, it wasn’t about the grade: mastery or developing, this was my final testament to Mpx, and I wanted to show how much of a difference it made in my life. In truth, I wanted a good grade, I admit it; but I know now what little value that letter holds. Mpx taught me to pursue something because I love it, not because someone tells me to. So in conclusion, my POL was average, but not my time in Mpx and if I ever hope to succeed, Mpx has already shown me the way.
Krislyn:
I felt that everyone has really improved over the year. Although, I thought that Noah and Austin’s presentation were one of the many that came the closest to mastery. I felt that they hit mastery because I really liked their story. I thought that the content of Noah’s presentation was really good because the main point was explaining that everything has a purpose. He mentioned that in the beginning many students were dropping out and didn’t understand why. Not only did he not understand why, but he didn’t even know what his purpose was. He explained how the projects really helped him to see meaning in everything. My favorite part of his presentation was the quotes. I really liked how he connected the quotes to what really happened. However Austin’s point of this presentation was much different. He talked about how he felt about school before and now. Experiencing MPX has had a big impact on his learning experience. He used to hate writing in elementary and now it is his passion. I think it was inspiring because this program really helped him to fall in love with school and now he either wants to become a writer or a teacher. I felt that I had a very successful POL because my speaking was fluent, I felt confident and sounded comfortable. I was talking more into depth about the text I had on my slides rather than just reading them. I could feel that what I was saying was really coming from my heart. Before the presentation I was extremely nervous. But, my dad told me, “if you wrote your script from based on what you felt, just speak from the heart.” Honestly, I am happy with what I said and wouldn’t change anything. When Mr. Kaneko asked me what was my turning point. I said when we first got our groups for aquaponics, I looked at my group and thought that they shouldn’t be in charge because I knew how they worked. After I said that I felt bad because even though I felt that was the truth, it must have been hard for them to take in. I felt that my answers were specific because in one question I related it to tennis and in others I used the info-graph and Iliad Weebly to help explain what I was talking about.
Ethan:
I think that Bradley was the closest to mastery because he was clear and was confident in what he said. He knew what he was going to say almost the whole time and his word choice was very good, it wasn’t too confusing and it didn’t sound like an elementary schooler recited it. His presentation was perfectly time, it was interesting so i wasn’t bored, and his presentation was’t distracting, it was more of a tool for him to use so we could understand him easier. I liked how he told us how he was from the beginning of the year and used his artifact to explain what and how he had changed throughout the year. he didn’t just explain what they were he explained how they changed him as a learner. Where as I feel like I mumbled a lot, I paused quite a bit. I also I kept looking down at my script and spoke softly when i didn’t know what I was going to say. My word usage was good I think because I spent a lot of time think of how i should say these things. My content was good, I told my story well and use my artifacts as artifacts of learning and not just things to say facts about. My presentation went pretty well considering a few technical difficulties. I my main strengths were my pictures because they help me speak my story, and my story because it was’t boring facts hat everybody knew already. But other than that i needed help on everything else. My communication need a lot of work, but I think i could fix that with some practice and just to run through it a couple of times. Also my length wasn’t very good I feel like I could of done way better and longer than that.
Noah F:
Some presentations that hit mastery were krislyns, nikki, bradley and emmas. There presentations hit mastery I think because everything about there presentation was on point. And I mean literally everything. First of all, you could trust what each person was saying, they were trustworthy. Next, the presentation was very aesthetically pleasing and eye catching. I was attracted to each and every slide honestly, I liked the colors. And they used the right amount of text and pictures, and they had a title for each slide. They hit mastery on their speech, there speech was amazing. All three of them talked loud, spoke clear, enunciated their words very clear, spoke with fluency, and they were very calm. These components made their speech good which helped their presentation a lot. And they didn't use umm or uhh to think.. they were prepared for this. And all of their stories were good, they had a problem and how they solved, they talked about what they took from mpx. And I like there answers to the question.
Mines compared to theirs was honestly pretty junk. I wish mines was like theres honestly. My speech was very poor I think, I didn't speak clear. I feel like I should of added more details and examples in my speech. It was a poor speech over all. I had a plan going in but I guess I froze up there and blanked out. I thought my strengths of this presentation was I had a good story. Even though I lacked a lot of detail and example, I had a meaning in my story and I did explained where I was in the beginning and end of the year. I thought I could of spoke a little louder and clear but that part of my presentation was pretty good. I felt my slides were good and it helped people understand what I was talking about.
Reyn:
Wow, the year has passed so quickly, it almost feels like I am still in eighth grade. However, I know better moving on is a part of life, just like growing up. And in this process of growing up this Pol was a checkpoint on the way to adulthood.
The closest that came to mastery in our grade would be probably be Aly’s, Bradley’s and Kai’s. They all spoke fluently and had the ability to look at the board, and if they had, their paper then they would speak from it while keeping good eye contact with the audience, they also made their presentations very relatable and able to find connections too. I liked all of their presentations, however, I think that by far Kai’s was the best, he had animations and a lot of slides to keep him entertained. I also think that Bradley had a really good opening and that he talked well and based his presentation on how he engineered something. The best part of Aly’s presentation was how she talked, she was very confident and she was also very smart because she stood there and had the paper and was very official, she was very relatable and you were able to tell she was sincere about here learning and what she really liked about the program, she was honest in her script and you couldn’t even tell she was reading off the script because she looked down, then looked back up and talked for two sentences or so and then she looked back down.
Taking all of these experiences and learning from them, I learned from all of these to take a script and put your heart in it and learn on how to find ways to make an interesting slide show and also how to start the begging of an amazing presentation.
Aly:
I think that this year everyone improved tremendously on there POL’s. After our first round of doing POL’s I think that I really improved on hitting closer to mastery this time around. I think that the student’s who hit mastery are Austin Nakamura, Kai Wilding, and Nicole Stacey. The reason I think these students hit mastery is because they really showed the true essence of being a model student and meeting and going above and beyond the requirements. I think that I could have hit mastery if I memorized my script and went more in to depth of how MPX changed me. I think that I did do a good job at showing how my outside life mixed in well with my school career. I think the strengths that I had during the presentation was exemplifying the fact that I really grew as a learner and opened up my ability to retain information. I think that If I talked more about how MPX could be extended and how it would be for the greater good of the students learning, we would have a fighting chance of actually getting MPX extended. I think that I could have talked more about our field trips and how that helped with my learning because that really shows how I learn. During my presentation I should have talked more about what we did on coconut island and that has helped me now. I think when someone would ask me a question I was very good at giving a very specific answer and was very clear with how it related to me and how it affected me. I think that I could have been more clear with how the artifacts affected my learning and how I connected with them. I think this year I did very good with my first year of MPX and I am very thrilled to go back in to the program and continuing with my MPX learning career.
Matt Fe:
I think Coltrane had a a mastery presentation, I feel like he really poured out his heart to us, he gave this presentation everything that he had. You could really see how different Coltrane is from other students, he has a real passion in school, he cares so much about his work and he’s against the teachers, but he still learns. The next presentation that I thought hit mastery was Nikki’s, Nikki has always been a good student all year, I thought her presentation was good because shes very good at public speaking. Everything she says sounds so real, Its like I can really trust what she is saying when she talks. I think my presentation was good, I think that you could really see the change in the way I learn and talk. My public speaking got so much better which I thought was astounding. I think the strengths of my presentation was my slides, and my story. To me this was the mastery of my presentation, I felt very confident in this speech, happy to be there. I think I still need to work on my public speaking, but I think it has gotten so much better, and you can really see the improvement. I wish I would of talked about how I created a good relationship with my teachers. This question had come up during my presentation. I answered the questions good but not great, I gave them the heart of what they wanted to know, but I left out something’s like when Bryson asked me how have the teachers helped you learn, and I didn’t give him as well as answer I could give now. I thought I used my artifacts very well, it really set the way that my project went. I used the artifacts that were most important to me.
Trevor:
I think Nicole Stacy’s was closest to mastery. This is because she met every target that was on the rubric and also went above and expanded upon those targets. For example in the beginning of her presentation she talked about how MPX is actually understanding the content of what we were learning instead of just knowing it but not really understanding the information. For example for the aquaponics project we actually had to understand how the system worked and had to know about aquaponics because if not we would not be able to explain it to people. I feel like I did really well on my presentation. One of the biggest strengths that I feel like I had was my communication. In communication I feel like I hit mastery, I was very clear with my speaking and did not use “um” or “like” very often. Another thing that I feel I did good on was my Aesthetics. My presentation was a little bit above six minutes and stayed in the time range it was supposed to be. I also think that my presentation seemed very rehersed and relaxed. One thing that i think needs a little work after watching the video and reading the rubric is my story. One thing that would have made my story better is having a one sentence summary at the beginning of the presentation and the beginning of each artifact. I think I answered the thought questions pretty well, I explained how I improved throughout MPX from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. I think my answers were pretty specific because after I talked about the artifacts I then explained how those helped me grow and change. I think the artifacts I used were good and I also made a good use of them.
Matt Fa:
The video I have chosen that comes closest to mastery is Coltrane Kubo’s presentation. The reason I have chose Coltrane is because I thought he hit a 5 on all of the subjects. First of all I thought his story was excellent. His story was so unique, he gave us his own personal information about himself now and what he wants to accomplish in the future. He tied in some of the problems he got in to, in the second semester getting in trouble with Ms. Ochai. He also had lots of content backing up every thing he said. He had a very aesthetically pleasing keynote. He had lots of pictures on each slide. The last thing he did very well on was his communication. He spoke with lots of expression and was very prepared for his presentation. Having a 5 pages speech. He had excellent eye contact and had very good body language.
I thought my presentation hit target for all of the categories. I thought for every category I have hit all the requirements for everything that is why I put target. I thought the best strengths I had in this presentation was my story. I thought my story was very unique from everybody else’s talking about my turning point in the third quarter. I think I need to work on my communication skills. A lot of times I kept on saying like and um. I think some of the stuff I could state more is what I thought of the learning style of MPX. I think it was a very good experience, that is was one of the biggest risks I took in my educational career.
I think my I hit my thought question with a little mastery and a little target. As I said earlier I thought my story was very unique. In the third quarter I had hit my turning point, that I need to start focusing and doing all my work. That everything has a deadline. The turning point is the main focus I talked about in my presentation. I thought I used my artifacts very well. The artifacts showed how my work got better. My inforgraphs, my essays, and my aquaponics. How I put a lot of effort in everything i did. The artifacts showed the efficiency in the work. I had a very good year in MPX. It is a part of my education I will remember for the rest of my life. THANK YOU!!
Tyler:
I am going to compare my presentation of learning to Coltrane Kubo’s presentation. What Coltrane did good was first of all, he used a great choice of words. His vocabulary is very good and showed his intelligence. He also had a great story and stated that he just wants to be himself and MPX has allowed this. His presentation was great because he stated why MPX is better learning for him and why he likes it. Comparing his presentation to mine, his was better because it was just so much more convincing in the way he said it. He used more examples than me, and talked with such intelligence. I sounded more monotone and he was and he was more convincing. Compared to the rubric, I feel that my presentation hit target most of the times and maybe the occasional mastery. I feel that my presentation was good because I used examples and images/artifacts. Using artifacts is good because it relates it to the topic you are trying to talk about. Watching my presentation, I felt that I was talking loud and clear while making eye contact with the audience. I also feel that I did good without using a script and just expanding on my points on my keynote. But I feel I need to stop fidgiting with my shirt. I think in my presentation, I should have stated more about how I will use the skills I learned in MPX and relate it to Pre ib. I should have talked about how MPX will help me next year. I actually got a question that asked something like this but I couldn’t answer it well because I wasn’t very prepared. I feel that in my presentation, I did very well at answering the thought questions. I had a great story and talked about how MPX has opened my eyes in what I think and feel about school. My story showed how I was in the beginning and how I have changed throughout the school year. I think I did a great job and using my artifacts to state my case because it was kind of the only thing on my keynotes. I used my artifacts to show the things we do in MPX and to help explain about our projects. I tried to base most of what I said off of my pictures and my little captions. The artifacts really helped me and acted like and outline or script to go off of. Throughout the whole year, I have improved a lot on many things thanks to MPX.
Shayla:
I think that my POL was worse in comparison to everyone else’s in MPX 9. I wasn’t really prepared and I added my pictures in last minute also when I got up there I forgot my speech because I didn’t rehearse it and I was nervous. I think that my presentation in the middle of the year was better than it was at the end of the year. I think Bradley hit mastery because his beginning was super good and he had a thesis and then he branched off of that instead of jumping from topic to topic. He also stated a problem and he gave examples on how he solved it and he also kept repeating his quote and when he first stated his quote it made no sense to me but as he kept going through his speech, it started to explain itself. His artifacts were really good because he used artifacts that really explained how he changed as a learner instead of using random artifacts. He spoke really well and I thought that he sounded calm and relaxed and well rehearsed, it didn’t even sound scripted in my opinion. If you compared mine to his, I would probably get a really bad grade because my artifacts were good but I didn’t really elaborate on anything. When I wrote my speech I thought that I could memorize it but I guess I was wrong. I think that (to be honest) there was absolutely no strengths in my presentation because I didn’t cover everything and I didn’t hit mastery. I think that it was because of my confidence was just down that day. Also, when they asked me questions I didn’t really know what to say so I could’ve done better on that as well. I used the word “like” a lot which is just natural for me because sometimes when I’m under pressure I talk like a typical annoying white girl. I wish that I would’ve stated how MPX was for me in the beginning, middle and end because that would’ve made my presentation longer and it would’ve made it sound better. Also, I think that I could’ve stated specifically how MPX changed me as a learner. I also could’ve made a better ending.
Sean:
I feel that Kai’s presentation hit mastery. He kept me interested throughout the whole presentation. He spoke loudly and clearly and there was never a time that I couldn’t hear or understand him. His presentation was filled with information and he never stopped talking. He never repeated any of his information either. He kept on talking about how he got better throughout the year and kept on talking and I was interested in his presentation the whole time. His keynote presentation was amazing. There was barely any words and he gave many examples on how he progressed throughout the year. He even had a video of himself when he was a kid and that was an example on how he started off, a playful child that doesn’t do work. He shows his infographs to show how much better they are now then how they were before. His keynote made his presentation better. His story was really good. He showed how he got better throughout the year. He gives many examples and I was very interested the whole time. My presentation was much worse. I stumbled a lot and my voice was shaky. I was very quiet and I repeated what I said a lot. I was not confident at all. Even though I rehearsed a few times it seemed like I didnt rehearse at all. Kai’s presentation seemed well rehearsed and he seemed very confident the whole time. Even in the beginning. My presentation barely had any information in it, I just repeated what I just said in different words. My keynote wasn’t that good either. I had some words but not that much but my pictures weren’t very good. I didnt really tell a story either. I just talked about how I hated doing work and now I don’t. Not really a story, I just listed facts.
Bobby:
The person who I think had the best Presentation of learning was Kai. He told his presentation well by talking in the third person, and actually telling people a story and being the narrator. His communications were really good since he remained calm, focused, yet still energetic, and really seemed to connect with the audience, by seeming friendly and interesting, but not in a way that was off topic and fooling around.
In comparison to this mastery PoL, I think mine seemed nervous, as if I were trying to remain composed but slipping at some points of my presentation mine was ok, since I could have improved yet still did well in my opinion. I didn’t really connect with the audience, while other presentations utilized bits of comedy and talked in a friendly way while still being serious. The weaknesses of my presentation were definitely that I seemed nervous, and not used to talking to an audience. It wasn’t that I hadn’t been prepared and rehearsed (I had practiced and done all I could do to be prepared), I just need to work on my explanation of my pictures, since I stuttered and needed to think for a second about what I was saying about the pictures. The strengths of my presentation were that I handled questions well, especially the question of why I wasn’t working in my original group for the google time project. I didn’t want to burn bridges, but some people in our group hadn’t been working well together, and I worked much more efficient in my google time project alone. After receiving questions from people, I realized that there were a few things I should have changed. It probably would have been helpful for me to explain exactly how the the story I added related to my journey in MPX. My mistake which I had made was that I had assumed that people would understand how the boy in the story is like me and my experience. When we made our PoL we had a major thought question to answer, which was to explain our progress over the coarse of this year. In my opinion I answered the thought question well, since I explained how I started, gave examples of work which I did to help me improve, and then used evidence of improvement at the end by explaining that I had a goal and that I was motivated to do work. We also used artifacts of learning to support our PoLs. I did we’ll in this area of the PoL since I used work that I could really connect with on a personal level, since that’s what really drove me to do well. For those projects I was motivated out of self interest. This is what drove me through development, so I knew I had a good example if I actually enjoyed the work and learning. I used them to explain and support my thesis of that I have improved this year in MPX. Over all I think that my PoL wasn’t the best in our class, but but I’m still very proud of my work.
Marshall:
Overall this years pols were mainly good. In my opinion I think that Emma’s and Krislyn’s pol was the closest to mastery. They spoke very clear and loud which was easy to understand when they spoke. The format of their presentation was very organized and easy to follow. They talked about their experience throughout the year and how they progressed. The artifacts they presented really did represent how they improved and what they learned from it. From my presentation, I spoke loud enough but not very clear to the audience compared to Emma’s and Krislyn’s presentation. The content seems to be the same but my communication needs improvement. I stuttered a lot and mumbled sometimes throughout the presentation. I should of prepared better and so that I didn’t have to look at the slides constantly because I forgot what to say. I walked around and kept on moving around when I spoke which was distracting. I should of stayed more still when I spoke. I blinked a lot when I spoke in which I was aware of but I guess I can’t control. The strengths of my presentation was the content and story. I had a good format of my story and had lots of details that goes along with the artifacts. I could of explained some points better that I said because I would just say a sentence I then move on to another point. There wasn’t anything that I regret saying or wish I said during the presentation or question time. I do wish that I prepared better and spoke clearer and didn’t move around so much. I think that I answered the questions well because I was straight to the point and didn’t really have to pause and think of my answer because it came straight to my head. I think I made my artifacts support my story because it showed how I improved over the year and how I became more creative and found a passion that I liked. I think that my artifacts really did help because it showed my beginning results and my end results as a learner.
Kai:
This year was a great opportunity for me, and the final POL was the icing on the cake. Allowing me to explain my learning, it helped me to realize how far i have come, and also allowed me to see how other people have grown and what we have all learnt. I watched Austin, Coltrane, Kris, and my POL presentations. I think Austin and Coltrane were very comfortable speakers, explained their development and growth in depth and expertly, and also connected with the audience. They achieved Mastery according to the Rubric. I believe Kris didn’t achieve Mastery in all levels but deserves an A. This is because I believe he achieved success. Success is based on your possible achievements and your past accomplishments and because I see how Kris has worked throughout school and this year I believe I saw a spark of drive in his POL. I saw his effort in his presentation and I saw how he really worked to create a good presentation for himself. And although he didn’t meet the perfect requirements he persevered to make something he is hopefully proud of! I believe I came closer to the requirements than Kris and were as good as Austin and Coltrane in many ways but I feel I failed in some areas. My presentation, preparation, and speaking skills weren’t as good as they could be. I think it was a let down that I used note cards and it was a negative that i couldn’t do it without a script. I believe the script actually messed me up a bit, and caused me to stutter. I messed up my speaking and I think my presentation decreased the importance of my message because of the way I gave it. I need to work on Content in the way of using my artifacts purposefully, Communication in speaking clearly and most of communication, also aesthetics in being prepared, rehearsed and personable. I believe I could work on all elements but achieved mastery in story and mostly content. I used my past, present and future to show my development, my achievements and what I could do. I spoke in third person to show how my life really could be explained in story. I explained my artifacts well and used them effectively to convey my point. In my speech I wish I would have said what I would, could or want to do in MPX next year. I also wish i said what I would do if i was running MPX. In MPX next year I would want to go more in depth into personal projects and continue or start now MPX projects. I would start the year continuing my extending MPX project. I would develop a speech and present to the faculty with the goal of extending MPX. I wish to create a better high school experience for myself and many other students. Then next year I want to work on my technology and media skills in editing, producing and others. If I was running MPX I would fight for the students, if they wanted to and had to passion to do so, to extend MPX for the better of everyone. I would also start the year of by telling the students what the goal, topic and planned end products wanting to be produced in the year and test the students to see if they can go above and beyond there beginning expectations. I answered the thought questions well and in depth in relation to my development and story. My answers were specific and helpful. I answered the questions however sometimes off topic and drifted away from the real question, so i need to work on handling pressure. I used my artifacts well to make your case defined and supported.
Kris K:
From the POLs that I watched during class and the ones I have just watched, I would say Coltrane had hit mastery in every sense of the rubric. My favorite part about watching Coltranes POL was that it was really engaging. while having a lot of info about himself and everything needed in the POL it was blatant that he was sincere and although he didn’t practice a lot he was an extremely good speaker. Coltrane also put in a lot of stories like getting in trouble with mrs. Ochiai or having ADD. Although his powerpoint lacked aesthetic pleasingness his oral speech made up for it.
To improve my own project I think I should have definitely practiced more. I didn’t sound very confident when presenting and I notice now that I was playing with my hand A LOT. Because of my lack of practice I definitely skipped a good amount of not actual points, but some details in the points which would have strengthened my presentation. I also noticed I didn’t answer some the questions asked to me “correctly” so I should have asked to have it repeated instead of just answering to how I interpreted it. I think I used my artifacts pretty well but I still could have gone more in-depth on the aquaponics I think. I also talked in sort of a mono-tone for a lot of the time so it may have been less or non-interesting to the viewers.
All in all I think I had an okay story but overall a presentation that had a good amount of information and an below average oral and body movement/speech
IP:
