Topic - compare and contrast 1984 and Feed to respond to this prompt - why do these books end this way?
The 9As
Austin:
Feed and 1984 both end in a way that could be described as a “bad” ending. Both of the main characters have their spirits shattered in ways that crush the morale of the reader. But why? What advantage does this ending have over a happy one? In my personal opinion, the first thing I could say about both of these is that a “bad” ending can, in some ways, be far more interesting than a happy one. How many books are out there that have a happy ending? This contrast from the normally light and happy tone of books is what draws readers to these books. My first idea is that they hold a different aspect from other books that could put these books on the edge they need in order to be sold. However, looking deeper into this, I believe that the books end the way they do, in order to drive home an important point: that these societies don’t produce happy people.
The endings of both books are different in some ways, but can be considered vastly similar. 1984, ends with Winston loving Big Brother. He has his spirit and logic crushed to the point where he simply accepts him, and decided to love him. Feed, provides an ending where Violet is a human vegetable, not conscious of anything around her and practically dead. Titus is broken beyond belief. He doesn’t believe in anything anymore, and is just dragging himself through life. The similarity is that both main characters were crushed, as I’ve said before. The reason this could’ve been done is to illustrate the point that the societies that they lived in could only result in sadness, despair and destruction. Essentially, both worlds are falling apart at the seams. In 1984, you can already see, straight from the start, that the world is in shambles. Everything is within a state of disrepair and all the people are miserable and sad. Within Feed, the people seem happy, but are generally bored with life, and their bodies are falling apart as much as the world is. They have skin lesions, their skin is falling off, the oceans are polluted to the point of acidity, the ground is poisonous, etc. Both authors explained, again and again, that those types of governments would only result in death, and horror. The endings of the book was a way to drive that point home.
Despite their many similarities, the books differ in a few ways. One, would be the endings. Winston, is forced through the ministry of love, a horror of a prison that tortures you until you break. His spirit is practically beyond repair. It’s broken and shattered to the point where he will do anything he’s told to, simply because he needs something to do. Titus, on the other hand, has only had his spirit partially broken. He still has the capabilities to come back from the brink and perhaps rebel against the companies. One of the biggest differences between these novels that would allow these two very different things to happen is how the control was enforced. The Party, made sure that everyone followed every rule of theirs down to the letter. However, in Feed, there was a small freedom that was allowed between all the ads if you had the mind to stand up to it. Another large difference between these books was the age of the characters. Winston, was a man in his 40’s. He was worn down, and old. Titus, was a young 16 year old boy. He didn’t know much about the world and was very content with his life. This big difference is another factor in what caused the differences in the endings. Titus definitely has a small chance to come back from his depression, while Winston does not.
The control in Feed was far more loose, and there were people who rebelled, but they were only censored by the government. These books clash and agree on so many different levels. You have to carefully pick and choose which aspects to look at so they make much more logical sense. Despite all of those differences and similarities, I believe that both of the endings occurred so the authors could drive the point home: a totalitarianistic government will only lead to the general populace becoming unhappy. I think both authors would agree on this, seeing as they both looked at the governments in the time period they lived in, and then asses what would happen if they took over the world (in Feed’s case, it would be the companies). This world domination aspect is what controlled the flow of both of these books, and what makes them so similar while still being so different.
Caelin:
Feed and 1984, they both seem to have tragic endings, in their own way. In Feed the book ends with Violet dying and the world dying with her and it seems that everything in the book that they’ve done is falling apart slowly. In 1984 the book ends with Winston loving “Big Brother” again and agreeing with everything the government tells him, kind of defeating the purpose of everything he has done. So in both books they seem to end with sadness all around, when the Authors could have easily wrote a happy ending where both governments fall and the world gets healed. It creates a more realistic story for the readers because we all know that if these stories came to life, this is how it would most likely end.
The two books, 1984 and Feed, have two different endings but in a way they are very similar. In Feed their freedom is taken away through media control and propaganda, there was also a constant struggle to fight the “Feed” because the characters didn’t know how to do anything without it. In the end the government/whoever was in control would not help Violet because they saw that she wasn’t a big buyer and they wouldn’t get much money out of her in the long run, AKA she wasn’t worth it to them. In 1984 Winston just came out of the ministry of “Love” and started to agree with everything “Big Brother” says. During the entire book Winston was constantly on edge because first he unconsciously started to despise “Big Brother” and then he meet Julia and started rebelling in secret, but eventually got caught. By giving in the the ministry of “Love” he tells himself he’s lying just to get out of the torture but, if he keeps lying it eventually becomes the truth.
I believe the books end this way to show that no matter what they do the people can never do anything about it. It also shows that the government can do what ever they want and get away with it. What I believe these Authors are doing is in a way showing us what were headed towards, that maybe it was to late for the characters in the book, but maybe not to late for us. The books end in a sad and depressing way to be realistic, meaning that we could all see this happening one day.
Krislyn:
The out come of the story always depends on the information that was presented in the past. In this case, 1984 ended up with Winston worshiping Big Brother because of all the torture he went through. The party had official broken him down and Winston was no longer able to redeem his old lifestyle. George Orwell quotes, “He loved Big Brother.” The government had determined the amount of beating he would suffer and if the answer that came out of his mouth was the one they were looking for, it was more success for the government. George Orwell wanted us to know that since everyone in Oceania is just like Winston, then everyone went through the same process. They were either broken or erased from the society. Therefor the government has been maintaining their power ever since the first person who tried to rebel. It shows that the government could not be overpowered and that was how it would be for the future generations. That children were going to be trained to work for them, grow up to be miserable and live that way for the rest of their lives. In Winston’s situation he was put back into the dreadful society and no one’s life had to be sacrificed.
One night Violet had an idea to go up to a cabin, just her and Titus to have some fun. But, Titus feels that his feelings have been held in too long and breaks up with Violet. From the middle to the end of the book the chapters are labeled by percentages. Those percentages are a representation of how much life Violet has to live. As you get closer and closer to the end of the book the numbers start to decrease. There was nothing that they could do. She was not accepted to replace her feed because she was not considered a smart buy. It was the result of shopping and pretending that she was interesting in buying things, but really didn’t. As Violet is dying slowly all she wanted to do was live and to have done all kinds of things with Titus. Unlike 1984, Feed was less violent and very depressing. In the end Titus goes to visit just before she is about to pass. He looks at her and begins to cry. Her eyes are open and just staring at the ceiling. The ending is saying that it really isn’t over. Violet has not completely past yet, and what was Titus about to do next?
Between 1984 and Feed, each ending ends with the same moral; each man was broken and was unsuccessful maintaining their love. The societies of Feed and 1984 control their citizens in the same way, through their mind. In 1984 and Feed both Winston and Titus have been broken down, just in different types of ways. I felt that in 1984 and Feed it was not truly an ending. I thought that there was some sort or continuation. When I was reading Feed I didn’t know it was the end of the book because it seemed that there was more to the story or the puzzle. The endings of each book are a result of what had happened in the past.
Reyn:In these two stories the stories are alike, while different, so what would make the end any different? I think that these two stories were going blow for blow on one another, they both had characters who believed in a way to trick the government and the major powers for fun, both of these systems had kids, who had almost no bond with their parents, and finally, they all are changed in the end. The story 1984 ended with Winston getting tortured and tortured until he could take no more, then he would recover and then tortured again. This caused him to love the leader of the government, “Big Brother.” He was rebelling for the entire book, except when he was forced to believe that not thinking was better for him. He started to believe in it because he was told it so many times. I think that he was tired of being tortured, and his mind was giving up, whatever his mind was told was what it thought, this is how the government wanted it to be, if something happened that they liked, they wanted everyone to believe in it, so Winston became the population and believed everything the government said and became mindless. Alike 1984, in Feed, Violet was different and had met a boy named Titus who was bored with life and wanted something new. Violet was different than everyone else and didn’t think much about it because she was poor and didn’t see many people who did have valuable things. The other people in the story like Titus were very rich kids who got everything they wanted, they were like the community in 1984, they all got something from being indifferent. Violet got her feed late and that started to deteriorate her until she could not talk, think, or move.
These two ending happen in different ways but they still meet at the same place, where they can no longer think or speak for themselves any longer. The story has it’s reasons for it happening and I think this is because this is what happened in real societies controlled by harsh governments. They both had lives that are ruined by the society they live in, trying to make them something or someone that they are not. They are given a companion that either they bring the best out of or that they are given the support of. The character’s personalities are them knowing things that seem like common sense, however it turns out that the community seems to not know what is going on. The people in these societies forget things easily and don’t pay much attention to the facts, don’t observer things carefully, they just start something and then assume that the front is the truth, they take no time to remember past events to see if it’s true. The many civilians could easily stop the governments and find out what actually goes on, they choose in both books make them think that everything they do is for the best of them, while actually it is for the benefit of the government. If, you were to rebel in a government like this they could shut you down before you got anything going. This is probably the key to governments, before a rebellion starts, stop it. It seems ever so simple, and something that many people do anyway, however, people didn’t always have the ability to stop these like they did in both of these books. Winston and Titus both think that they had nothing else until they met the females, Julia and Violet. They both think that they can do more things than the government knows they can’t. For example, they knew that sooner or later they would catch Winston, and they also knew that the Feed was so encouraging that it was hard to go against. The females in this story also think of it as they can get away with things that they will get caught for, Julia had sex with many men, while Violet knew about her condition and did not really ask for help from people she knew would give it. These stories are very similar, and so are the ends.
Blaine:
The two stories we read were Feed and 1984. I thought these books were always kind of similar from the beginning to end. The characters were some what different but I thought the idea of the story were always similar. The people were always getting controlled and a lot of them had no idea what was going on. The end was different how it ended but my feelings towards the end were similar
I thought the 2 ends in both books were similar. In 1984, after all the torture Winston went through and all the rebelling he did against big brother, he turned to Big Brothers side. I thought that was sad because throughout the whole book, Winston has always been against Big Brother but at the end, he was on Big Brothers side. Winston was breaking rules and rebelling throughout the book. He was having sex with Julia and writing his thoughts in his diary. The ending was happy for Winston because now he believes in Big Brother but for me I feel like you should never switch sides no matter what. Stick to what you believe in and never give up. Winston did the total opposite and got controlled by the government. I was also sad because I feel like the government was the antagonist character in the book because they were controlling everyone and I never would want the bad guy to win. In this book, I think the antagonist won.
In feed, I thought it had a sad ending like 1984 but it was different. In feed, Violet dies because the feed she had in her head was very weak and it was normal like everyones feed. She had a bad feed because she was poor. The feed ended up breaking down and Violet ended up dying. I thought this was sad because Violet was my favorite character. She was very nice to Titus. She talked to Titus everyday. Titus was nice to her but after she got her surgery and got ugly, Titus stopped messaging her and was mean. Violet still tried to be nice to Titus. I love people with that kind of personalities. Violet also was a smart human being. She new about what the feed was doing to people. People new they had a feed in there head but what they didn’t no was it was controlling them. Violet was aware of that. Overall I loved Violets personality and she was smart to go with that. The fact that I liked Violet as a character was even more sad for me. I think anyone would have been sad with the ending that this book had. I would father have Titus die because he was mean to Violet throughout the book.
In feed, the book ended with “I could see her face crying, in her blank eye”. In 1984, the book ended with “He loved Big brother”. I think both of the books ended with sadness. In feed it is saying Violet is dead and she died sadly. It wouldn’t have been as bad if Violet ended with happiness with no regrets but it said she was crying. In 1984, it ended with sadness to me. Other people might think it ended with happiness but I think it ended with sadness. Winston was against Big Brother almost the whole book and than at the end it said he loves him. To me that is a really sad and disappointing ending. He did everything he did for nothing. Overall I was disappointed with the 2 books because I don’t like sad endings. I also like books that leave me thinking and I don’t think either of the books left me thinking. I love the plot of the book but the ending disappointed me. It is not how I wanted the ending to end.

Marshall:
The ending of these novel concluded the overall control over these two societies. The power of control that the Feed company and Big Brother had overpowered the rebellious motivation of the protagonist characters. The protagonist characters personality and action is what made the differences between a happy ending and a depressing one. Winston actions directed the path of the book towards a unexpected ending. He was finally caught by the party and was tortured to his surrender to Big Brother. He couldn’t stand the physical pain that was forced upon him and soon after betrayed his love of Julia. In Feed, Titus couldn’t rebel because he doesn’t understand how bad the Feed is to him. The society in Feed is mainly about consuming technology products because as long as they have the feed they are happy. They are constantly relying on it because without it they won’t know what to do.
The events that occur throughout the book is what lead to the end result of the book. When Winston was caught by the camera behind the painting that then lead him to the torture by O’Brien. That is the event that lead the ending of Winston’s rebellious acts. It would be unrealistic if Winston successfully does rebel against the party and actually makes a change in society. The control that Big brother had overpowered Winston and his rebellious acts. “Until they became conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.” - 1984. In feed there was no possible way they could rebel because they had no motivation or reason to do it. As long as they had the Feed they would never rebel unless they knew the true effects of the feed. The Feed and 1984 are very similar because of the fact that both societies have the same purpose of control. Both protagonist characters in these two novels were fully controlled by the government/Feed in which they can’t escape control. Because they can’t escaped control there couldn’t be a happy ending. That is the reason why these two novels ended the way they did. Control over people effects the outcome of their personality and actions that they do. If there wasn’t control then it would be a totally different novel. Absolute control is reason why the novels ended the way it did.

Both of these books end the same in some ways and different in others. Both of these books end sadly and with the protagonist characters losing their battles. Both of the books also end up with the government or big companies winning the battle. In 1984, the book ends sadly by Winston ending up loving Big Brother. The party did this to Winston by torture and using his greatest fear against him. After he learned to love the party, his love life changed. He met up with Julia and told her he didn’t have feelings for her anymore and they shouldn’t see each other. This was shocking to me because it makes me think about how much can someone control another? The torture really got to Winston and now he is possessed like the rest of them. I feel that the ending to this book was really something that I didn’t want to see because the whole book is about how Winston hates the party and how he wants to overthrow it. But when this happens at the end of the book, it really made me sad and think about our own government and that I should be thankful for our government. In my opinion, I think the author made this book end in this way because he wanted to show how powerful governments can be. I also think he was sending a message, metaphorically, to people saying that this is what it was like to live in Russia or Germany. This book ending is very similar to the ending in Feed. They were similar in that they were both sad endings of the protagonist characters losing their battles. Also, they both ending up not together and going their separate ways.In feed, it ends with Violet, the true hero of the book, dying because of her feed. Her feed ends up killing her because their feeds got hacked. Since Violet’s feed was installed into her later in her life than most kids, when she got hacked, her feed malfunctioned and started to kill her slowly. When she is dying, Titus tells her that he will tell their story and keep Violet’s spirit alive. I feel that the author ended Feed in this way because he wanted to show what people in control due. I also think he ended the book this way because he wanted to show what technology can do to a society and even to the world. I think he was showing what life will be like in the future and how technology will take over. This makes me rethink my love for new technology and how this business has evolved over the years so much.
Along with the many similarities of these books, they also have many differences. In Feed, the ending is different than 1984 because Titus ends up learning about the feed and knowing what it can do to a body and how it can ruin/kill it. In 1984, Winston ends up loving big brother and completely failing his goal of taking over the government which was sad to see. It made me see the power of totalitarian regime. They are also different because in Feed, Titus didn’t want to forget about Violet. He wanted to tell her story until Titus himself died. In 1984, they are perfectly ok with forgetting about each other because the totalitarian government took away their feelings. They don’t know how to love anymore. Another reason these two books are different is because in Feed, there is more of a sense of closing or completion. In feed, the book ends with Violet dying and being freed of her pains, and Titus finding love again but also learning how dangerous the Feed can be. In 1984, it ends with me having no sense of completion and makes me sad. It just ends with Julia and Winston separating. In conclusion, I feel both of these books ends sadly because they want to show the readers how powerful government and technology can become.

Both 1984 and Feed end in both similar and different ways including what the authors were trying to convey. In 1984, Winston and Julia were tortured until the government was able to change their perspective of how they see certain things. When they were able to escape alive, they forget about what they had believed in before. It was a depressing ending with Winston, knowing that he changed into what he feared. He loved Big Brother and he couldn’t do anything about that. In Feed, Titus and Violet broke up and hoped to forget about what happened at the moment of their fighting. Titus realizes that there is no point in being together with Violet since she is already half dead. What both of these endings have in common is that they all give up. They let those in power take over them and stop fighting to rebel. Violet doesn’t try to fix the Feed anymore, she doesn’t try to live a fun life any longer without Titus. The world with the Feed was also being destroyed, people were rebelling for reasons that they did not know. This shows that in the end, both books display a sense of useless struggle. Another similarity is that they try to move on with life, Winston and Julia leave each other knowing that things have changed and they don’t have a connection of love. Titus leaves Violet and eventually starts to date Quendy. Violet also moves on in another way with a different, happier life without struggle. They end this way for many reasons I believe. To show that no one can escape the government, the Feed, anyone in control. To show that no matter how you think and wish to rebel, they are always there watching you, killing you from inside to out. The characters all rebelled until the end of the book when they were trapped. They all knew that the end was coming, that there was nothing to do anymore and this was because of those in power. I believe that the authors made a sad ending to show that everything is effected by people in control. The characters could not stand each other, they didn’t care much about each other towards the end because of the Feed, and Big Brother. The Feed made Titus sick of Violet when they were in the hotel room. Big Brother made Winston and Julia not believe in love. The end showed that even rebels can’t do everything to stop those in control.
Although there are many similarities, there also many differences. At the very end of the book in Feed, Titus visits Violet in her death bed as she dies. After resenting Violet for the longest time, he realizes his mistake and he comes to his senses. Titus tells Violet that their love was special and their story is a story that will be told and not be forgotten. That is what is different, that is what showed that he was not completely changed back from being a rebel to a normal man with a Feed. Winston had nothing left in him, he was tortured so badly that his memory was changed. Another difference is that Winston didn’t care anymore that he was being brainwashed, he doesn’t know unlike TItus. Titus saw the slow and painful death of what control did. He saw the Feed killing Violet and understands more than what Winston understood about power. I think that the author wrote the end of 1984 to show that those who got out of being tortured in those societies were scarred for life. I believe that the author was showing us that once the government takes control of you, you are done. In the very end of Feed, the Feed in Titus connected to what he was feeling. He was feeling sad and ads started popping up for things that were blue: dresses and jeans with “prices so low!” Everything must go. I think that author did this to show that Titus might have finally understood the torture of the Feed. He was seeing the words “Everything must go” and realizing that he couldn’t escape it. In the end, I believe that both authors were conveying that you can’t escape control.
Trevor:
In both books, 1984 and Feed the endings are both have similarities and differences. To begin with both books have sad endings. In both 1984 and feed the characters have to move on with their lives and forget one another although in feed it takes Titus longer to understand that. In both books at one point the characters give up on each other. When Winston is let out of room 101 he quickly gives up on the idea of him and Julia. But when Titus begins to notice that Julia is going to die he gives up on her because he knows there is nothing left.
When I compare the endings of 1984 and feed there are some differences too. Most of these differences come from the differences in the story and how they would end. After Winston is tortured in room 101 he is tortured in believing what ever big brother wants him to believe. For example when when when O’Brien tells Winston that 2+2=5 after a while Winston begins to believe it because Big Brother says so. Once Winston begins to love Big Brother he forgets about Julia. The way I know that Winston forgets about Julia is because when he gets released from room 101 he see’s her but does not say anything to her. This is different from feed because when Victoria begins to die and does die Titus does not forget about her. Another difference from the two book is that when both books are coming to an end there and two different reactions from the two different characters. In 1984 Winston comes out of room 101 as if nothing had happened. He shows no emotion as he should be in the totalitarian society he lives in, other then showing his love for Big Brother. In Feed when the book is coming to an end he becomes very sad and emotional. This is because there is less control in the society they live in and he can show emotion and do things out of the ordinary. What Titus does in feed is he buys a bunch of the same jeans. He also goes and sees her for a last few times because he does not want to forget about her.
I think these books end the way they do because it shows that in a totalitarian society you can not get away from the control. It can be totalitarian through complete control or just electronic control that you vouch yourself into you can still never get away from it. These two books both show that in a totalitarian society the government will always win because even if you try to go against them they will catch up to you one way or another. Another reason that I find that these books end the way they do is to show that in a totalitarian society you will always go back the way you began because it is the only way you can be.
Kainoa:
1894 and Feed are similar and different in different ways. Feed and 1984 are the same story but just portrayed in a different place and a different time. Both have a way to keep society under control but have society not know that they are totally under control. At the end of both 1984 and Feed the main characters end up being totally controlled by big brother or the Feed companies. They both move on with their lives at the end of the book but they move on with either the companies in total power over them or big brother and the government in total control. The characters also go down in a very heroic passion, because they rebel for the greater good all the way till the end. At the end of both books the characters know that the end is coming but they want to keep rebelling until the end. At the end of the book they give up on each other and they give on themselves. i thought this was sad because in both books they rebelled an never backed down and when this happened it just made the book even more sad and depressing. At the end of 1984 winston falls to big brother and becomes like everyone else. In Feed Violet becomes like a vegetable, she is not aware of what is happening in the world and around the world. Both of the character were destroyed and had no will or even anything for that matter.
Even thought the books are similar in lots of ways there are some differences that set the books apart. Both Winston and Julia are broken completely, unlike Titus he can still function and he wants to remember violet and let people know what happened to them. Winston and Julia forget what happened to each other and erase each other from their memory. In Feed the society lets people have a little breathing room to do what they want but in 1984 if you don’t follow you don’t exist. Feed I think controlled the people more than in 1984 but 1984 was more strict. When the hacker hacked their feeds they didn’t know what to do and they were completely lost but in 1984 you are just taught from such a young age to do what the government wanted you to do. I think that if the parents in 1984 taught the children differently then they wouldn’t be so controlled but in feed they implant a chip in your brain in my opinion that has a little bit more control. I think that the authors ended the books in this way to show that if a society is run like this someone will rebel and have the smarts to see what is going on. The authors also symbolize that if the government or companies run everything then the population would be unhappy with what is going on but just wont say it because they are too scared.
Sean:
Both books ended badly. In 1984, the book ended with Winston loving big brother. He loves big brother and what he does. He thinks big brothers good. Winston gave in to big brother. He was weak. He couldn’t sacrifice himself to give others the drive to take down big brother. He was being tortured so much because big brother was trying to make him love them. If he had sacrificed himself, others would’ve followed and team up to take down big brother. That didn’t happen. All his rebelling was for nothing. He gave in and loved big brother. All big brother did was hurt him. But he loves them. Feed ends with Violets feed acting up and she almost dies. Since she got her feed late, her brain was already developed and didn’t have to rely on the feed. Because of that, she was at a higher risk of malfunction. It is harder for her brain to adapt to the feed because it was installed late. When the hacker hacked the feed, it damages Violets a lot. So its slowly dying out and Violet is becoming less alive. She ends up not being able to think, unable to use body parts (arms, legs, ect.), and unable to function. At the end of the book she ends up only being 4.6% alive. Her hearts barely beating. She cant do anything on her own. She’s a vegetable.
In 1984, big brother tortures Winston until he’s not himself anymore. He becomes one of big brothers minions. He will do anything they tell him to do. he’s not himself anymore. He became happy but he didn’t achieve his goal of defeating big brother. In Feed, Violets feed gets messed up and she becomes a vegetable. Her feed gets messed up and she cant function anymore. She’s practically dead. She cant think, she cant move, she’s only 4.6% alive. Both Winston and Violet want to live, Violet wants to party an Winston wants to be able to do what he wants. Winston rebells and he gets caught, Violets feed gets damaged by a hacker. They end up losing. Violet dies because of her feed, and Winston loves what he hated. They both fought for what they want but they could’ve fought harder.
Josh:
Both of the book have there similarities and differences, one big similarity between the books is the endings. In both of the books there endings are sad. In the end of 1984 Winston got turned in for rebellion against Big brother, he is sent to room 101 and he is tortured and he is brainwashed to love Big brother and the party, and so is Julia. Then they are sent back into the world loving the Big Brother and the party. In the end of feed Violet figures out how to get around the advertisements the feed give you. She figured out that if you go to a bunch of random stores that have nothing to do with each other than the feed doesn’t give you ads anymore. While she is figuring out how to avoid getting ads on the feed she is also dying. She asked the big corporations for help but they didn’t find her as a good investment. So for her rebellion she died. These book are both the same because at the end of the book the main characters are left broken beyond repair. In 1984 Winston was so broken that he just gave up on trying and exempted the fact that it would always be this way. He just ended up loving Big Brother. In both of these book they did. In both book they tried to move on with there lives after the brainwashing and the death of Violet but in both book they both crumbled and excepted the fact that it would never be the same. In both books the main characters were giving up on each other like they weren’t going to make it through and they were arguing with each other they knew that the end was coming and it wasn’t going to be a good ending. Both book had a sad and depressing ending with the government coming up on top.
Even though both of the endings were the same and they were sad and the government came up on top. They also had there differences. In both books the way the government took power and made people obey them was different, and the time of when the book takes place wasps also different. In 1984 they tortured you to get information out of you, and to make you crack to them. In feed they used the feed to control people they used it to give variety in their life but actually it was benefiting the companies. In feed violet died a slow and painful death. In feed Titus noticed what was happening around him now he noticed that the feed was a way of control and that it was killing violet off. In 1984 Winston was so out of it and all of his will and power was sucked out of him and he didn’t know what was going on with the power and controller. Since the author of 1984 was around during the world wars he saw what was going on and how hitler was in control of everything and other leaders were dictators, and they had all the power. I feel like the ending is like it would be in life if it was being controlled by hitler. If you were found rebelling they would torture you so bad that you would be brainwashed to love him and then sent back into the world. I think that is what the author thought it would be like. At the end of Feed he saw in his feed an ad for blue jeans the ad was saying everything must go time after time. I think the message the author was trying to get across was that Titus finally is realize the day to day torture he is getting from the feed.
Kai:
Both books end they way they do because each book is so closely related to our past that it uncovers a fatal truth; the Power always wins. Both books have one ultimate control which in 1984 is the government, and in feed is organizations and companies. Both books also use a form of monitoring to maintain control, but they use different means. 1984 uses a technology called the telescreen which is a huge television. This telescreen broadcasts messages all day and can not be turned off. The government also watches you through this device. In feed the organizations use the very feed in your mind to monitor, collect and categorize your thoughts, needs, wants, and dreams ect. The main characters in feed include Titus and Violet. These characters both have very distinct pasts. Violet has been poor all her life and only got the feed later in her journey, she gained knowledge and understanding of many things by learning differently and having known what its like without the feed. This leads her to rebel. Titus has no past because he has been taught subliminally to forget it. Like everyone else. Just like in Feed, 1984’s characters are very similar. Because everyone has been stripped of their past, you never learn a lot about them. This is because they don’t know anything either. Julia, in her recent past has slept with many inner party members of the ruling government. She is mischievous and rebellious but only rebels for her own pleasure. Until when she meets Winston they fall in “love,” and commit many sexual crimes throughout the book. Winston is a regular working man until he meets Julia and is brought into this scandalous love affair. Winston is not like everyone else either because he has a resource to the past. He works at the ministry of truth and corrects the past but is told to forget and realize that the lies he is creating is actually the truth, which gives him motive to have dreams of rebellion. Both powers have a connection to or power over a secret or non secret lower power or secret police. In 1984 they have the thought police which arrest possible traitors and gather information. They also have children to become spies and report everyone around them. In feed people are monitoring you 24/7 through the feed and using your thoughts agains you. They also have advertisements everywhere which keep certain things in your mind so you think about it more. These advertisements are a form of propaganda to keep you always thinking about one thing. In 1984 they use the posters of Big Brother as propaganda, to make you think he is ALWAYS watching. In 1984 they need you to work ignorantly and love big brother. In feed they need you to consume and once again be ignorant.
Feed and 1984 so directly relate to our past that we can realize why both books end the way they do. Like the forms of control and information gathering in both books, in our past, Hitler and Stalin had spies and secret police which would gather certain information about people and report it but also scour the night and make many arrests nightly against possible traitors because; “It is cheaper to lock you up, than to monitor you.”- Stalin’s secret police. Which shows that people where watched every day in both books to know if they were doing anything wrong and even if it were something extremely small they could lock them up because its easier. Each society’s power in both history and the books was created from a democracy. Each power has killed many people to remain in control. The greater power in each story has eliminated its competition to become the ruler. Each power had used propaganda for both control, spreading of a common idea, and control on thoughts. There are four types of citizen in each story and history. The ones that are very aware of the serious troubles and devastating situation, so they try to rebel and are killed or sent to camps. The ones who are aware and are smart enough to realize that they have to love the ruler to stay alive so they become hardcore followers just to stay alive even though they know what's going on. The ones who are completely naive, ignorant or know and don't care so they let things happen to them and don't rebel or do anything out of the ordinary to the rest of the population that is living. And finally the poor (proletariat), or just people excluded from regular society that are not worth the rulers time or not needed so they are killed, used for a purpose or just ignored. All this shows that both the books and the history of Hitler and Stalin are very alike. So just like history, the reason each book ends this way, is because the Power always wins. Just like in both books people like Julia, Winston, Titus, and Violet are sucked dry of intelligence by the power if possible and if not, then they are tortured or denied help or excluded from society where they die, learn to love th ruler or become inhuman and are a blank slate for the power to paint it’s control. The power uses its resources, (the feed, telescreen, spiec ect) to gather information, (rebellion, crime, disbelief in ruler, civilians having knowledge ect) and use it against the people, (murders, sent to camps, tortured, ect) to maintain and remain in control. This also shows that Hannah Arendt was right in saying that power is the ultimate goal, and once they have collected or produced enough control, the Power always wins.

Bryson:
Feed and 1984 were written to warn our current era of the negative effects a totalitarian society can have on its people. So, if violet were to live, or Winston were to be successful in taking down big brother, the message wouldn’t have been as successfully portrayed. Knowing that both endings couldn’t go the protagonist’s way, you can see why the stories ended the way they did.
The way 1984 ended completely contradicted the message I thought the author was trying to portray. The message that I believed he was trying to say was that all it takes is one man to take a step forward and they could fix a corrupted society, or any corrupted group anywhere. The way 1984 ended was Winston giving into the party, letting them brainwash him into loving Big Brother, and following all the party’s satanic rules. In other words, eventually we all fail, we submit our loyalty to Big Brother, and Love does not prevail all. It leaves me with not only a lot of questions, but a feeling of content because the story didn’t end how I expected it to. It sort of pisses me off because what was the point in reading the book? The story itself just left myself in a daze because of the lack of hope it provides. I guess since this story was written to caution us about the dangers of a Totalitarian society, the story was successful because I NEVER WANT TO BE APART OF 1984!
Feed’s original intentions were to be based off of 1984, so you know there endings have to be similar. The Feed is a chip implanted in your body at birth (payed for by your parents aka. they don’t force them to get it; it’s a personal choice) that can watch your ever action, every feeling, and can control your every thought. The Feed is run by the corporations, or Apple, as we would know it to this current era, and they control everything so they can get all the money. Feed ends with Violet going into Mal and pretty much dying. While this is happening Titus is acting like a total douche bag and not even looking at her memories, treating her like a dead person, and just not being a good guy. The ending is very somber and touching because even after all those dicky moves, he still ends retelling her story, and it was a different approach to explain why Totalitarian societies are bad. The way they explained it was that since her Feed looked weird and she wasn’t buying as much, the corporations told the doctors not to fix her and left her to die. To conclude, these stories were meant for one purpose and one purpose only. It was meant to warn us to not turn into what they are. It is to caution us, so that we don’t turn into them.
Isaiah B:
Both books end in a not so similar but similar way. I think 1984 ends with death but its a peaceful death. What I mean by that is when Winston leaves he is knows he is going to die but still is okay with it because he made peace that he can’t change what happened. I think the sadness is there but it’s not as relevant as it is in Feed. Feed ends with death buts its a sad death. There is no peace with what happened. Violet dies and there is no closer to what happened. Everything is grim in Feed however in 1984 there is peace with Winston’s death because of his actions. Books are parallels to real life and I think the real life in these societies and in the books was death. 1984 and Feed are very similar to the Nazis and the USSR.
In 1984, the book ended with happiness within Winston because even though he had been broken down in torture but now has made peace with what was going to happen to him. I think the purpose of the way the book ended was to show that at some point once all else fails we as humans break down with the society. I also think it shows that its not always gonna be a happy ending. If you look at the book from a far you think it’s happy because Winston leaves really happy. I think Winston was more peaceful because he didn’t try to fight it. I think the book ended the way it did in 1984 because he wanted to show that you can die and you don’t have to die in a sad way but can die with peace and don’t have to be always sad.
In Feed, the books ended rather grim with Violet death and Titus goes down also. I think Feed ends different then 1984 in that one has a peaceful death but the other death is grim. I think Feed was more apparent than 1984 because it ends with death. You can see and feel the death were as 1984 ends with death but you have to use your brain to figure out that death will come to all of the characters. Overall, I think this was a reality for people who live in a society like that. In Germany and the USSR people had no way out for them to get out so it was like they were going to die. However, in 1984 Winston made peace with his death. In Feed, Violet dies and there is no peace but only with more questions. I think in both societies is was ineffable that they were gonna die but death could have been either peaceful or not.
Both authors used death to end there books. I think they chose death because they didn’t want to sugar coat anything in these societies. For many people death was the ending to there books which made it all the more scary. The only way to show truth in the end was through telling and not trying to show people what happened. I think that’s why I liked the books because it was true to life in that not your not always gonna have happy endings. If the books ended happy then there would have been no point in doing the story because it would have been for not. Both books are mirror images of the USSR and Nazi Germany which was true to the societies. I think it would be a injustice to the people who lived in those types of societies for the authors not to tell the truth in the ending because it would have not been the truth.
Fansler:
The author of every book wants their book to end where the reader wonders, what would happen next, but in some cases the author wants to give a message. In every book the author always wants to give himself options to what he or she could do next. The author wants to always make sure he could have a continuation or leave it where he ended. But in some cases the author tries to tell a message. Which is what happens in the feed and 1984. The authors try to say there is no escape from totalitarianism.
In 1984, the book ends with Winston turning. At the end of 1984 Winston is tortured by the government. They then break him. He ends up siding and loving Big Brother the man that Winston despises throughout the book. The author ends the book this way to leave the reader hanging with questions. Questions like: Is Winston gone? What will happen with Julia? Will Julia die? Will Winston ever be the same? Those are all questions the reader could think of. This gives the author an advantage to either have a continuation or end the story. But also he/she leaves their message. Everyone will eventually follow Big Brother.
In the book the feed Violet had just died from the feed. She had been denying the feed thought the book creating a fake. It then slowly shuts down her organs. Finally at the end of the book she ends up passing away. The author does the same thing that happened in 1984. He/she leaves questions like: What will happen with Titus? What about others who denied the feed? Will Titus tell people? But, the author gives a message about totalitarianism. Saying there is no escape from the feed. You will follow or there will be consequences.
In conclusion, the authors gives us questions after reading their book but also gives us a message. In 1984 they gives us questions such as what will happen to Winston? But saying everyone will follow Big Brother eventually. In the feed its what will happen to Titus sense Violet died? Same thing there is no escape from the feed if you resist there will be consequences. I do think it is a good thing the authors leave us hanging. It makes us want more eager to find out what happens but also think about the meaning behind the story, teaching us there is no escape from totalitarianism.
IP:
Both 1984 and Feed ended the way they did because totalitarianism is a very deadly system. Once it is started, and the control is set, it is virtually impossible to stop and rebel against.
1984 ended the way it did because there is no way to beat a totalitarianism system. Almost everyone is against you, everyone is brainwashed to follow the leader and there is no escape. Especially if you are and average joe like winston was. He was simply weak and there was nothing he could do. He was weak just like me or you; this showed when he turned in Julia. I bet everyone would have done the same thing. This book was mean to be a guide of what would happen if a system like this comes into place. Winston had absolutely no chance and in the end he caved after all the torture and all the pressure. Thats why the book ended this way, there was no possible way you could succeed against this type of leadership.
Feed ended the way it did with Violet dying because she had a fake feed because she tried to beat the system but failed. In a system that is being monitored 24/7, with total control there is no cheating or beating the system. The Feed is there to control you without hurting you. It distracts you from digging and finding what is really going on with ads and telling you to buy things so you forget what you were thinking about. This was the same lesson as 1984, there is no escape. If you try to resist, you will fail in the end and there is no escape. This book was a lesson to people in one perspective because it told what would happen if this type if government came into place just like 1984 but in a different setting. 1984 was one of those books where it could be in any point in time because there is no specific technology or anything to give away what time it took place. The only give away was maybe oceania and the telescreens. Feed was more in the future becasuse you could tell that they had more advanced technology and they vistited the moon and the feed was very advanced technology.
In conclusion, these books ended the way they did to teach people about this type of government but in two very different situations.
Kris K:Both Feed and 1984 ended with a tragic, terrible ending. The heros of the stories did not accomplish anything and they ended up being killed themselves. I think that the books ended this way to warn people that most people in a totalitarian society are brainwashed and are just objects to the ruler of them, and even if you are not and you try to be heroic and save everyone, that you will fail.
I think Winston died a happy death because he tried so hard to find peace. Sadly the only way he found peace was through being tortured by the Big Brother until himself too was brainwashed. Even though Winston had a pretty good strategy of finding other people that would rebel and how he found the brotherhood of rebels he still died. I guess this ending was to say that even though you could be the one really smart and not brainwashed person in the totalitarian society that you will not succeed in taking it down.
I think Violet died a sadder death. She died slowly and painfully, being paralyzed and vegetating in her room during the last days of her life. I think Violet never had a chance in hell of doing anything to disrupt the Feed. All she did was make herself stand out like a sore thumb because all she thought about was confusing the feed and actual real world problems and caring about the world herself. No matter what violet did she would have been detected and eliminated by the Feed and her plans would never have a hope of coming to fruition. If she never had the Feed I think she could have accomplished something big, but because it was almost a necessity life she had to get it.
Now that I think about it I think Feed could actually just be 1984 400 years in the future. I think this because the government went from watching you to being inside you and your thoughts, they would no longer need thought police, and any history they wanted to change they could do it in an instant.
Because the Feed and the Big brother were so powerful the people could never do anything to change or destroy it. In real life totalitarian rulers have had a lot of power but they had never fully brainwashed their people. Because these books had successfully gotten the brainwash of all the people the people couldnt and wouldnt do anything so thats why the authors ended the books the way they did because there is no hope at all.
Josh:
Both 1984 and Feed both had a some what similar ending that was made to convey the same anti-totalitarianism message to the reader.
In the end the writer really points out how people’s skin is falling off, and how bad the pollution has gotten. Some examples are when Titus’ mom’s teeth started to be visible at all times, when whales need plastic plastic to be able to stay alive, and when violet becomes incapacitated. What I think that it could be is that it could have been on purpose. The reason that we think that is because when she started to mess with the feed its power and capacity started to go down. Could it be like 1984? The reason that I ask this is because just like the 1984 government when someone does something that is wrong than they deal with it. So even though they do it differently, 1984 they toucher and manipulate people into doing what they want and in Feed I presume that they lower the functions of people’s feed and makes them incapacitated. That could be how they stop rebels in their society.
In 1984 before they got to Winston he was very happy. He was very rebellious against his government. He would purchase things and write in his journal right next to his tele screen so the camera couldn’t see him. Another way was his relationship with Juliet and when they where reading the books and eating the food. When the government found them, they arrested him and juliet. then they took him to jail and talked to him and took him to A-101 and tourchered hime with rats wich remined hime of his childhood after that he was fine in their eyes. After he was krippled he loved big brother and became like everyone else. He was looking forward to death because it was big brothers will.
Both ends tell the reader that humanity cannot survive in any totalitarian society. In the two books the totalitarian power was not stopped but they won because in both books there where rebels and they corrected their problem with them. So basically what they where telling us is that in a totalitarian government the people will never win and the only ones who can win is the government.
Bradley:
In most the hero of the story triumphs over evil and defeats the evil man. But what if the hero was not to win what would happen? Well in the book 1984 and feed this exact thing happens were the hero is not triumphant and villain wins in the end. In most story's this would depress you and ruin the story but in these books it is quite fitting that the "heroes" do not win. If the heroes won then that would ruin the entire message of the book which is to educate you about living in a totalitarianism regime and that at a certain point it is impossible to stop a regime like this.
Yes, there was another reason to end these books this way, besides to depress you and lose all faith in humanity, it was also to teach you about totalitarianism. if these were normal story about totalitarianism then the hero would win and the it would be over with you having a happy sense but this is not the case. So what could be their motivation? it is to educate you about when you are in a totalitarianism regime and change your perspective. This idea of changing your perspective was ever present in 1984 but was a bit more hidden in feed because it almost ended like a bad love story. You can still tell that they are similar because they both have the kind of have a, letting go/soul crushing feeling inside them where they are just unwilling to go on with what they were fighting for. This is like at the end of 1984 where winston knows big-brother is going to kill him but he still convinces him self, against him better judgment, to love big brother. This idea is although out the books even from the beginning of 1984 you could tell that Orwell might not want them to succeed because he depicted winston so badly and he was not a heroic character. The same thing with feed, Anderson wrote Titus’s character with terrible grammar in mind so you could tell that he was a stupid teenager. The “heroes” of these books are set up for failure from the beginning of the book and are then used to convey there message. Both Orwell and Anderson were great writers and were just trying to worn the world about totalitarianism and to act quickly even when your distracted by gadgets and feeds.
Bobby:
The books 1984 and Feed had very different endings, that send the same anti-totalitarian message to the reader.
In the ending of Feed the writer really focuses on how belly everything is rotting away, like people’s skin, and the oceans and land being so polluted. The writer says that Titus’ mom has lost so much skin teeth are visible even when her mouth is closed, and also how whales cannot survive in the ocean without wearing a plastic coating. Another major thing that is highlighted is that Violet is completely incapacitated. It could have even been done on purpose by the corporations, since once she started trying to prevent the corporations from gaining power, and once she started messing with the feeds, that’s when her feeds efficiency went down. All of these are meant to tell the reader that this will happen if the world becomes a totalitarian society.
In 1984 it ends with Winston completely brain washed. He is disfigured from torture which was so bad that it has made him worship big brother unconditionally, and out of his own free will. For resisting the party he no longer even has his own beliefs or thoughts, and it doesn’t even seem to be Winston any more, but more like a shell of his former self, who now worships big brother. What the author is trying to communicate in this ending is a warning against totalitarianism. It had to be this ending, a sad one with no hope except death, and not a happy one where Winston and Julia defeat big brother and live happily ever after. If it had been happy then you wouldn’t get the idea of totalitarianism because you would think that it could be stopped like in the story, when really what makes a totalitarian society is one unconquerable power with all the power, to maintain and use it how ever they like. It’s saying there is no hope in a totalitarian society.
The idea that both books are conveying to the reader it that humanity cannot survive in a totalitarian society, and to scare people into being anti-totalitarian.
Shayla:
In 1984, the book ended with Winston and Julia forgetting about each other after being tortured and Winston totally loved Big Brother. In Feed, it ended with Violet being incapacitated. I think that these book endings end in similar ways. In the ending of 1984, Winston was tortured into loving Big Brother. In Feed, Violet became incapacitated and couldn’t talk or move. The biggest similarity in both book is that the people who ran the society won and the “rebels” couldn’t do anything about it.
1984 and Feed although they have different settings and a different tone, the general ending is very similar. None of the protagonists won. The people in charge had ways of watching them and if they didn’t like what they saw, they were eliminated. Winston and Julia didn’t die but Winston was brainwashed into loving Big Brother and when Winston and Julia saw each other again, they found each other revolting. Whereas Violet probably still loved Titus and Titus still cared for Violet. When I first read the ending of Feed I didn’t think anything of it, but now I think that the government had something to do with Violet’s incapacitation. If you think about it, Violet messed with the Feed and tried to get around it. The corporations probably knew about it and since the Feed is basically an organ when you grow up with it, they shut it off because it’s also a machine. What supported my thought was when Violet asked for help from the Feed, the lady said they couldn’t help because she wasn’t a “smart buy” because she didn’t buy anything that the Feed had advertised. So in a way, the people that were in charge got what they wanted, they made the rebels stop rebelling. There are some differences in both books though. In 1984, Winston couldn’t fight anymore because they tortured him so badly and his memory and thoughts completely changed. In Feed, Violet wasn’t brainwashed and I think Titus finally realised the effects of the Feed and the horrible affects it has and that it’s not all that great like everyone said. I think he learned more about control whereas Winston already knew, but then forgot.
Between both of the books, each ending ends with the same message, that the rebels were beaten and unsuccessful in maintaining what they wanted so badly (Winston and Julia were unable to attain love and defeating Big Brother, Violet and Titus couldn’t maintain a relationship and no one could escape the Feed once they had and lived with it.) In both books, the powerful people controlled the society by using propaganda and brainwashing them or they eliminated everyone that rebelled or everyone that was a threat to what they were trying to do.
Malia:
In Feed and 1984, they both end is similar and ways, both with what the author is trying to tell us a certain message. In 1984 both Winston and Julia were tortured until the government changed there lives. After getting tortured, they ended up getting away from the government with everything being ok. After getting out they both forgot about everything that happen in the past such as things the believed in. It tuned out into a sad ending, because Winston changed into a whole new person, and that was his biggest fear. In the end, Winston will always love Big Brother and obey him.
At the end of Feed Titus and Julia broke up, and they hoped to forget everything about it. Titus held on to hard to his feelings about her. From the beginning to the end of the book, the chapters are now being labeled by percentages. Those percentages are now telling us how much more life Violet will have to live. As you move on into those chapters they start to decrease and that means Violets life is decreasing. Since she didn’t have a lot of years to live her Feed would be running out and the advertisements could not do anything because they didn’t like her. As Violet slowly starts to die, all she wanted to do was do a lot more things with Titus.
Between 1984 and Feed each book ends with the same kind of ending. They both end with each couple breaking up. Both couples found no success with finding a true love life. Both societies are controlled the same way, they are controlled all through the mind. In 1984 and Feed they both end with either one person dying or soon to be dying. In both books both men are being broken down by there love lives. I felt that both books were ended in a depressing way. I think that in Feed it was true what the author put in the very last pages that “Everything must go.” It made me think that there was going to be a little more added on, but it all just ended. I felt that both authors were did good on conveying one message.
Noah F:
1984 and feed have ended the way they did because of how the book was structured from the beginning to end. Although there were some similar and differences between each book. In 1984 the book ended with Winston being tortured and in feed it ended with violet dying by the feed. In both books they were sort of set up by the author which made you have a feeling the book wasn’t going to end in a good way.
Some similarities between both of the endings of the book were how they gave up and stopped in what they believed in. What I mean is in 1984 when they caught Winston, he just gave up. The police physically and mentally tortured Winston. He gave in too the torturing, he snitched on Violet, he loved big brother, and he no longer believed in what he wanted to do; rebelling. He could’ve just gone through the torture and died because that was going to happen anyway but he gave up. In feed, Violet gave up and stopped believing in what she wanted to do also; rebelling. When her and Titus broke up, she stopped fixing her feed and stops being happy. Another similarity is that you won’t always have the power to stop something for some reason. Like in 1984, O’Brien didn’t have the power to stop the government since they were watched 24/7 and he wasn’t able to build an army of rebels. Another similarity is how they were pretty much stopped from rebelling from the beginning by the authors. They made us think Winston was going to rebel and save the city of Oceania but he didn’t. He was caught from the beginning which was pretty much the end of his story. In feed, they made Violets feed really messed up, first they gave her the feed late which didn’t make it work properly and then when they hacked it, it just ruined it. It made things worst was when she broke up with Titus. The protagonists stories from the beginning were set up to end in a wrong way.
Some differences between the ending of the books are the moods. In 1984, the book ends with not really any feeling. Winston just changes his mind into loving big brother and accepting that big brother is the leader of all things. But in feed, it come to a sad ending where Titus visits Violet and tells her how he regrets they broke up. He tells her sorry for what he has done and owns up to his mistakes that he has made. He tells her that he loved her and their love was special and unbreakable. This is the difference between the ending of the books that in 1984 there is no emotion and in feed their is sadness and sorrow. This had made me realize that the author is trying to say there isn’t always a happy ending and not everything will end the way you want it too. There won’t always be a hero to save the day. He was also saying that once you’re in control there's no turning back.
Fenton:
Both books end very bad, also very similar , there’s so many questions that aren’t answered. Thats how these totalitarianism societies work, they don’t tell things to keep there power. In both stories the authors don’t give us all the information, but keep us patrolling the evidence we know.
1984 ends with Winston loving big brother. He loves big brother and what he does. Winston gave in to big brother. He was weak, He couldn’t sacrifice himself to give others the drive to take down big brother. He gave up against big brother and his power. Winston died but he got every last thing out of his body, and in this society I don’t know if you would even want to be living. Winston rated out Julia and got her in trouble. What winston did was very wrong, he should of been a hero and stuck up for himself and her.
In 1984 its a peaceful death for winston. Like he knows he is going to die but he liked having the closure. I thought feed had a sad ending because violet died, and she was a good person, all she did was get her feed later than others she did not deserve to die. Titus should of been a better guy, he was real piece of work. He wasn’t there for his girlfriend, and violet was always there for him. I would actually compare these books to Stalin and hitlers ideas, because in every book you could no speak out about the government, and you could not do to Stalin or hitler or you would disappear. The main similarity to all these is the fact that everything has to do with death and propaganda. I would say that feed and 1984 were more Terrible in terms of death and government, but Stalin and Germany were animals of people, treated people terrible for power.
In the end of both stories there was death, I think the author’s ended these books like this so it really left the reader feeling differently about a book that doesn’t end with a happy ending. I thought they were a good change of perspective because normally every book there’s a hero. I disliked the fact that there will a lot of questions unanswered, but maybe thats what the authors wanted and this relates to the fact that we have so many unanswered questions about what Stalin and hitler did, but we will never know those. In these societies the leaders are so secretive about there government . These books really showed us how you can never runaway once your stuck in totalitarianism society.
Noah:
People that are in control usually stay in control. That is what was being conveyed in 1984 and feed. The societies that take years and years to make and structure are the best. The have pillars that will back up the other pillars if they crumble and fall. also I believe that it makes a better ending if its tragic. Both of the protagonist died in the end.
In feed we had Violet the protagonist of the story. She was the one that wanted to change things to the better in her eyes the thing is it did not change at all. The corporation came into power by inventing something that people got addicted too. The feed is the way the corporation came into power. They monopolized everything, The corporation is not a government its a business that is in control of all the governments and everything that is within those government. The endings to feed and 1984 are similar because the corporation and Big Brother are just too big and strong to take down. They have monopolized everything around them and made it so that the people rely on them. Violet did see the fault that no one else could see but she did not have the means or resources to make them widely known. She dies because the corporation saw that she was against them. They figured that why save some one that hates them, and could cause them problems in the future. Violet life was already partly over because of her and Titus breaking up after titus is gone she does not fell like their is a point of fighting.
1984 ends with winston thrusting his had up into the air to make it know that he loves Big Brother. He shows that he has given up and everything that he was fighting for no longer matters. In part Winston also has died, not physically but mentally. His drive, His personality even his feelings for Julia has been left and forgotten in the room that they tortured him in. They changed history winston is not a rebel, he did not try to over through Big Brother. He loves Big Brother and will do any thing to defend him.
In my opinion the books are very very similar. They both end with the protagonist dyeing. Their supporters abandon them and they are consumed by the very thing that they were fighting against. It ends up being that the person has been erased from history.
Ethan:
The reason the books end like this because is probably because it needed to.
The books need to end in a tragedy for numerous reason. The books needed to end the way they did because to convey there message. They needed the reader to understand that totalitarianism is inescapable and that if we get sucked into it than nothing we do can get us out, not even the hero.
1984 ended with them torturing Winston until he gave up Julia and than beat him senseless until he loved big brother. And in the end, he say I know what is going to happen but as long as big brother wants it. Since everything is owned by one power if you anger them than you are gone, weather for rebelling against them them, or just not doing what they say, you will be eliminated. Winston hid for weeks with Julia, but one slip up, one mistake, they get caught by the thought police.
Feed ended with the companies shutting off Violets feed, paralyzing her and rendering her pretty much dead. After rebelling against them than they just shut her down like she was a disposable machine. She had metal plates stuck to her, she is stuck in bed from paralysis and she is barely alive. This affects so many different people like her family and friends like Titus. They don't loose hope in her or in what she believed in, but now they know how strong the companies have become and what they can do.
The moral of the story is that totalitarianism is bad and if there a country that falls into it than either make sure their influences don't spread or we terminate them because they cause a major threat, more than terrorist, more than war, because this will last forever. Not even the hero of a book can stop them. Once they come up they are not backing down.
