Coltrane:
Totalitarian societies have emerged time and time again throughout history, oppressive and controlling. The nuances of them are sometimes ambiguous, but the same question reins true time and time again for them: In what way do they retain their power, and which method is most effective? In the books Feed and 1984, a massive totalitarian society looms above the inhabitants-1984 more prominently than Feed. The problem is though, does that make Feed’s dystopian society any less encroaching? In 1984, the party holds power over the entirety of the state. Oppressed, the people are brainwashed to love Big brother and the party; In Feed though, the people are controlled by their feeds, implanted into their consciousness, the feeds incept advertisements making the citizens slaves to their own vanity. Both of these parables about the dangers of totalitarian society paint a picture of a potentially catastrophic future if this course is taken, but, which form of control is the most complete?
1984 is quite straightforwards-the party is all controlling and at an early age you are convinced that that is the only way and grow up never feeling joy or emotion and working for the party until you die. During that time, the party keeps you in poverty and manufactures their news and events, calculating widespread reaction and blatantly lying to the people. Essentially, the gist of this is that the party is trying to replace humanity with their loyal subjects and rule indefinitely. Strangely, the only curve ball in this story is that their language is being debased through newspeak. I found this at first quite an innocuous concept until I thought about it more, language is humanity’s number one weapon. Aside from a comprehensive brain, our language is the only thing that keeps apart from simple apes. With newspeak, their sinister goal was to narrow down the human language to such a degree that any thought of rebellion would be impossible because no such word for that exists, That may sound bad, but what is instead of around you, the messages were inside of you?
In Feed, corporations are inside of almost everyone’s minds, constantly bombarded with advertisements, the people are enslaved with their own desire to have the latest things and lead a life based on hedonism. In a society like that, who would ever want to rebel? Also, everything may not be as peachy as the government tells them it is: according to Violet, poverty and rebellions are prevalent world-wide, people are covered in lesions and no one seems to know, or even more surprisingly still, care. This passive nature nurtured by the Feeds could potentially be even more pernicious. The corporations are controlling the schools and not teaching crucial courses like history, and in its place trivial lessons centering around debauchery. Their language is fading away into antiquity and everyone is too adsorbed in their feeds, their possessions and themselves to ever be able to stand up to it.
The internal nature of Feed has caused me to believe that Feed is the more malignant of these two examples of totalitarianism. The power that the feeds possess, being inside one’s head, can be used for more evil and have a truly terrible potential. Also, because the people inside of Feed are content, the people with the feeds wouldn’t want to rebel, and the rein or the corporations would be eternal. Because of this, I would have to say that the power held in the feeds is superior to the power held by Big Brother and the party.

Bryson:
While I read Feed and 1984 I notice that both societies are corrupted to their core, but the weird thing is that the people seem happier when they go along with the corrupted government, so they just ignore it and they just let it happen. Throughout Feed, the people are constantly being monitored by the built in feed they get when they’re babies. The feed is run by the corporations who pretty much took over all of America’s school system because the American Government couldn’t afford it anymore. If you were to comparer the Feed to something today, it would be the iPhone because it’s that “thing” that everybody wants. As the story progresses you can see that the Feed is pretty much bringing America to the path of failure, and the people are turning into zombies with money that the corporations could take their money at any second of the day. But again, nobody cares because everybody thinks its “cool” and “hip” and that the lack of thinking is awesome. When Violet is introduced she is the “winston” of this story because she see’s whats going on and wants to fix it, but can’t and Titus is just another citizen who doesn’t really care even if he see’s the problems in the society. Violet can see what’s wrong with the Feed because she grew up without one, so she didn’t have it take over her senses and she has some human traits left. I believe that Feed is our “glass ball” that we can use to see whats going to happen to us in 20 years. If we don’t fix what were doing today then were going to become just like Feeds society.
Feed is just the new version of 1984. The only difference is that the ruler in Feed only want money, and in 1984 all they want is power. During 1984 people aren’t allowed to have a life outside the party and if they do they are brainwashed to love it, just like Winston. The biggest thing I noticed was the frame around both government’s even though it is not said in Feed is that “If you control the past, then you control the present, and whoever controls the present controls the future.” Both societies want that no matter what because in 1984 they want power forever and in feed they want all the money. Both societies have rebels, they look at them crazy, I look at the ones who would change the society back on track to a good government. Even though America in Feed isn’t a “totalitarian” government, they aren’t technically one, but they treat their people the same as in 1984 because they only care about what they want or the better for themselves.

Shayla and Fansler:
1984 and Feed both are controlling governments but they approach it in different ways. In the books the feed and 1984 they both have totalitarian societies. Meaning both of he societies are controlled by the government. In 1984, everyone has to obey Big Brother which is the government. If you don’t, they turn you in and they make you worship Big Brother before they kill you. Big Brother is a dictator that creates the rules, determines the consequences, and is your judge on life or death. In Feed, the citizens are watched just like the people in 1984, except they use feeds that are implanted in your brain to monitor your thoughts. The people rely on the feed to do everything and they’re basically hopeless without it.
In 1984, Big Brother basically takes away all your freedom. They monitor you 24/7 with telescreens that they put all around the city. And if you rebel, they though police knows about it or will soon find out. They also use propaganda to make you love Big Brother. In Feed, the idea is similar but a different process is used. In Feed they monitor you with a feed and they monitor your thoughts and use advertisements to make you buy products and do things subconsciously.
1984’s philosophy is OBEY Big Brother. Everything revolves around him. He says what goes and who stays alive. He said no sex so the community listened. But, some people rebel against him. But in the book 1984 not even the rebels could with stand his authority as the rebel Winston eventually followed him. There control is much more direct. Compared to feed they are much more free. The people in feed can go anywhere they want, do anything they want, and think anything they want. But every person has chips in their head. They are still monitored by the government. So the really the 1984 government is very strict compared to feed.
In conclusion we have shown that feed and 1984 control their people but they do it in different ways. We have seen that both of these societies use the totalitarianism government type. They use totalitarianism to control and manipulate the people of the societies.

IP and Noah F:
1984 and Feed are both a fascism government and symbolize totalitarianism and they also take their means to the extremes, however in 1984 you are totally controlled by fear and the thought police while in Feed you are being controlled without you knowing. Their people are controlled by an autocratic government that keeps control on its people by taking control of their minds and thoughts. The machines they use are somewhat similar because it is a mechanical device that controls the brain and its actions. You suffer in both of the books while the tactics and methods are different, you ultimately suffer. Both governments are almost impossible to rebel against because they have systems to prevent such a thing.
Even though the government goes to extremes to control its peoples mind and thoughts; the methods are at the different ends of the spectrum. 1984 uses fear and the telescreen while Feed’s “Feed” is somewhat viewed as something to help the people and make their lives easier. A portable computer linked to your mind, while it is actually used for much more than that. In 1984 you have absolutely no freedom. You don’t think for yourself, you can’t exercise by yourself, and you even have words taken out of your vocabulary to benefit the government, the thought police, and Big Brother. While in Feed, you have tons of freedom, and I mean tons. You can do whatever you want! Have parties, hang out with friends, even go and party on the moon! And you don’t suffer at all in my point of view. I would rather be in feed then 1984 because you can live a joyous life. You suffer, but you don’t feel it, you don’t know it. In 1984 the people are sick because of lack of food from the famine, they are malnourished, they have limps, they just don’t live a very healthy lifestyle. But in Feed you grow up as a normal person, you have friends, and you have a good time. But more importantly, you don’t feel the torture the feed is actually putting you through. Even though both are virtually impossible to rebel against, they have different ways to keep you in order. 1984 is constant peer pressure to obey big brother and whatnot. There is also the fear factor they instill with hate week and all the torturing they do. You do not want to rebel for your own well-being, and it works. In Feed you cant rebel because the feed controls your brain. The government could change your thoughts and you wouldn’t even know it because it’s your own brain.

Bobby and Josh:
In the books 1984 and Feed, both are totalitarian societies because there is one ultimate power ruling over all; however, 1984 has no freedom while in Feed there is a lot of freedom.
In 1984, we never really found out who was in power. There was big brother who could have just been a made up image to help control the people, the thought police who monitored everyone and everything, the Victory Party who seemed to control just about everything, or any one person who we might not have known, since their government is so secretive. For all we know the torture that Winston went through might have been something that the government is doing to everyone one when they are most vulnerable to turn them into the perfect citizen, since we don’t know if Winston was killed or not. With 1984 people had almost no freedom since most of their schedule was planned out for them, and they lived under strict and harsh rules.
In the book Feed, the corporations watch the people so closely that they’re inside the people. This book is almost the same thing as 1984, since there are people who’s lives are completely dependent on the corporations who control and own the entire world around them. Theres another similarity between the two of them, and thats that life seems good because of the constant flow of propaganda but in reality you can see theres major problems like the hordes of cockroaches, the unhealthy life styles, and poverty like the hospital on the moon leaking oxygen through that decayed room. In Feed, people are constantly manipulated in every way, from the feeds to school, but their rules are not enforced, just extremely persuasive. The corporations make sure that everyone is caught up in their own little worlds and not paying attention to anything except them by giving you all resources you would want or need through the feeds.
Both of these books talk about totalitarianism societies, while Feed, is less extreme with more freedom, and 1984, is more brutal, they both convey the same point of avoiding becoming societies like these.

Malia:
In 1984 and Feed the over-riding theme is that there are controlling governments. In both books, they have totalitarian societies. In 1984, the book is centered around a city called Oceania. The citizens of Oceania worship their ruler who is known as Big Brother. Big Brother is a man who creates all the rules, determines the consequences, changes the language you speak and makes you believe whatever he feels is important. In Feed, the people are watched just the like citizens of 1984. However, in Feed, they use “feeds” that are implanted into your brains to monitor and influence your thoughts.
In 1984, Big Brother is basically the ruler and takes away all your freedom. In1984, the governments monitors you 247 with tele-screens all around the city. If you dare to rebel, the thought police will be out to get you. Since Big Brother is a ruler and nobody likes him, the government has to use propaganda posters to make people accept and like him. It’s also used as an intimidation tactic so people feel he’s watching them too. On the other hand, Feed is a totalitarian society controlled by “feeds” implanted into your brain which monitors and influences your thoughts. In Feed, they will use advertisements and messages to make you buy things from the government. Feed is put under control of the organizations while in 1984, it is run by the government. In 1984, the philosophy is to obey Big Brother. Everything revolves around him.
In 1984, you will have to abide by Big Brother or if he says to not do something, you cannot do it. For example he said no sex, but people would not listen. In 1984, the control is more serious and direct. In Feed, you have an illusion of a little more freedom. You can do more things, go places and what you want. But you are still controlled by the government with chips in your brain.
In conclusion, I think that both 1984 and Feed are meant to keep people under deep control but just in different ways. The similarity is that they are both controlled by the government which is ultimately totalitarianism.

Bradley and Ethan:
Feed and 1984 are both books about oppressive governments that are ruled extremely similarly, but are upheld very differently. From first sight, feed is a book about dumb teenagers in the future in space. 1984 is an old man fighting against an oppressive government. In 1984 Winston was fighting against the thought police who are deployed by Big Brother, a thing shrouded in mystery. He is fighting for his freedom, his happiness, and his love, Julia. In Feed there are no thought police and no sign of an oppressive government which is actually scarier. If you look deeper there is a chip that know everything they do, think, and desire. The people that get this information in feed are the big businesses that control everything including the president and how kid are taught. They get rid of history classes so that they do not know what it was like before the feed and they like it because they were raised to think that history was boring. 1984 instead of not teaching it they create a new one that is in their favor. Feed these teenagers are dumb and we consider them dumb because we look from a different perspective, but their not brainwashed yet. 1984 on the other hand, we see them as brainwashed because the perspective is so much different, but dumb and brainwashed are just different sides of the spectrum.
The similarities are small, but they are there. The Feed has the same job as the thought police, they give big businesses complete controlled of their mind and can manipulate or conform to their liking. Big Brother would then take the subject and go torture them until they got what they wanted. The thing that makes the feed scary is that they can change their thoughts without even being near them through the power of suggestion. History in both of these book are all blurred, Feed persuades them to not like history and that being their preference it is not done with force witch is unlike 1984. The people in both of these books are effected in similar way, Brainwashed and dumb. Dumb is just a milder form of brainwashed because all dumb people are brainwashed, but not everybody brainwashed isn’t dumb. Dumb in are eyes is because their society sees it not to be dumb, but correct. So even though these book are literally centuries apart they are actually very similar. Even thought the technology and methods art different.

Fenton and Isaiah B:
Feed is similar to 1984 because they are both suppressing there societies to do what they want. However, they are different because in 1984, they are doing it just to keep power and nothing else. But in Feed its the corporations that want power so they can have power and also make money not just to have power but to make a profit.
In feed, people are controlled by the feed that's in there brain. If you control a wide of number people and make them all the same type of personality then you can make the world the same. If you can control what someone thinks then you can have control of what they do and how they think. That is what the feed does because its in your head and targets your personality then runs ads based on it. However, the feed categorizes people into personality types and then makes you think what other people think in that category and then you lose your personality and become like everybody else. That’s the problem with the feed. In 1984, your controlled by Big brother which holds power over you. They install fear in people's eyes which allows them to be able to control you. Much like Hitlers Germany, in 1984 people are rewarded with there allegiance to Big brother whither it might be more food or columns on them in the newspaper. Even though both books look different on the outside they are the same thing because they both control how you are make it so that you can't rebel. 1984 uses force to make sure you don't do anything while Feed controls you by making you no different then someone else which then hinders you from being able to rebel.
So how is feed different from 1984? In feed, the corporations are the ones that are suppressing the people rather then in 1984 how it's the government. The feed is run by companies which hold the power because they are constantly in your head and see what you think and target you. I think the companies also have power in the government because of the evidence found in the presidents speech. He tells the people of America that the allegations of the corporations being bad are wrong. He tells them that if they believe in freedom they would not be mad at the corporations because they have the right to do what they want. I think some key words in his speech which can be considered propaganda is when he says “American” corporations because he takes time to add that in his speech when he can easily just say corporations. It makes people not get mad because its there own people. The motive in feed is much different then 1984 because in feed they are trying to get money and power out of it but in 1984 they are doing it so nothing changes in the society. In 1984, the sole purpose of them having power is to keep power. What I mean by that is they get nothing out of being in charge then just being in charge. In Feed, the corporations get money and power out of the government but in 1984 everything Big brother does is not to gain but more so there is no rebellion. That is why it's different then feed because they just keep suppressing the masses.
Control is needed in all aspects of life, it binds us and helps us and makes us prosper if used in the right way. But I believe that Feed has a lot more control of its people than Big Brother does in 1984.
Although they both controntrol their people feed has a lot better control because of their technology. Everyone in Feed has a microchip in the back of their head that is pretty much an unlimited source of knowledge in one place they have made it so that they have enough control over the people that they can just turn the person off like a machine and they do not need a very large police force. What they have on each person is like a facebook except it shows all their inner thoughts and it shows their exact location it shows what they want every thing about that person is racked up into that profile. This corporation not a government it is a business that manages everyones Feeds. This corporation owns everything that is how they became so powerful without them there will be nothing. They have also made it so people can't function without the Feed. They are in TOTAL CONTROL!
Even though 1984 has less control they are still have the majority of the population in their grasp. The reason that people revolt in this community is because they know too much. People like Winston and Big Brothers right hand man revolted is because they decided what Big Brother was doing was bad and they wanted to stop it. This society came into power by pumping enough propaganda and fear into the people to make sure they won't go against his judgement. This is a society that relies on cameras and police to enforce the law but even then they still can't see their inner thoughts and emotions.
Control is need it helps us make the right decisions and drives us away from the wrong ones it is the perimeters of life but when there is too much control there is confinement and that leads to depression which leads to revolt and war. Control is needed in all aspects of life, it binds us and helps us and makes us prosper if used in the right way.

A totalitarian government is always an oppressive one. The only reason for totalitarian rule is for the leaders to have complete power over the people for the benefit of themselves. Whether the government controls you mentally like in Feed, or physically like in 1984, they are both extremely oppressive.
The methods used by the government to control the people in 1984 and Feed are completely different, but in the end they both boil down to complete mind control of all individuals. The way the government accomplishes this in 1984 is by 24/7 monitoring of everybody by implementing telescreens everywhere that pick up everything you say and every movement you make, and by making a “thought police” that will torture you and make you completely just vanish if you are thought to be a traitor. This makes people so scared that they don’t even think about rebellion towards the government, and even if they did, they could not communicate them to one another to start a rebellion. In Feed, the government holds control over the people in a very different manner. They let people have freedoms such as cars and vacations and nice clothes and houses, but they are also given chips called the feed that is put into your head to broadcast their version of the internet which would be extremely hard to live without in the society. The Feed is in your brain, and it knows everything about you. what you want, what you don't like, your thoughts, your emotions, and the government can access all of this information. Corporations control the feed and advertise stuff to you all day long and they make the loads of money off of it. This controls people because they always want to buy
The setting in 1984 and feed are very different from each other. In feed the society is a pretty lively one where people can go to the mall and visit the moon and they all live in pretty nice houses and most have flying cars. The setting in 1984 is the opposite to the extreme. People in 1984 live in extreme poverty in dilapidated houses with very little to even eat or drink and they have zero fun or excitement or love just pure fear.
The people in 1984 and feed seem very different from each other but in reality they aren’t that different at all. In 1984 the people have been completely brainwashed by the government into believing that they live in a luxurious place with an amazing government. Although they were brainwashed into thinking they live a great life they still all hate life. Everybody is in constant fear of being killed or taken and tortured and that makes it impossible to enjoy life. In Feed the people have a lot of freedoms that the people in 1984 don't have. They can go shopping and fly around their cars and have relationships and actual lives and even trip to the moon. But, the feed implanted into their brains floods them with ads and makes them unable to enjoy life because they are always wanting something new that they won't even care about and they can’t ever turn off the commercials. They can also access all information they ever wanted, so they are extremely just bored with life and have no questions. Both societies consist of brainwashed people that are just being controlled for the benefit of the government, they are just ruled from different methods of control.
