Austin and Caelin:The people who are in control in 1984 and Feed use different methods and have different ideals, but both have the same goal: to maintain control. In Feed, the people in control are not the governments, but the companies that are running the Feed. This is in contrast to 1984 where the government is always in control and there are no companies in the 1984 universe. The main similarity would be that the people in control have the ability to always remain in control. The Feed is a powerful tool that people use in order to control everyone. No one realizes that they are being controlled, and if they did, they’re fine with it because they have the Feed. However, in 1984 the government is always expressing dominance and is forcefully controlling the people. However, they’re making it so that they don’t realize that they’re being controlled by simply making them love the party. In Feed, they just divert everyone’s attention to something else. However, they’re indirectly controlling them by suggesting things to them that they might not want. How the Feed manages to do this so well is by making everyone bored of everything. Things just change so fast that you don’t have time to dwell on anything that comes out. Within a week of something new being introduced, it’s immediately replaced by something “newer”. A really big similarity between the two is that no one in either society is happy. No one in either society is content with their life. Everyone in the Feed world is generally bored and they’re always looking for something to do. On the other hand, in 1984, everyone is usually miserable and sad. They spend their time either drinking or doing nothing. Both societies are societies that are bent on control and endless supply and demand. Feed is always making new things to sell while 1984 is in a constant war state that is always demanding resources. One other very big thing within these two worlds is the language. The language has been cut down to only what they need to say. In 1984, it is referred to as newspeak. The words are cut down to the bare minimum. In Feed, their language is simply degrading. They all talk like a middle schooler who thinks he’s cool. In some senses, the Feed world is on it’s way to where the 1984 world is. By doing this, the people in both societies are having their thoughts limited. No one knows how to speak well and words are limited, and therefore so is thought. People are becoming ignorant to words. 1984 and Feed do have some key differences in their process of what they’re doing. 1984 is a government ruling by absolute control and dominance. Feed, is being controlled by corporations, and by distracting everyone from what is really happening in the world. Most of the people in these worlds are ignorant that they are being controlled, no those that are aware are being controlled.

The two societies in the books: “Feed” and “1984” both have a sense of totalitarianism, but in different ways. The differences of the two societies are the way that totalitarianism is being pushed across. The societies in terms of control are very different, in Feed the people are more care free and have a passion for life, while in 1984 it is the complete opposite. George Orwells 1984 has a sense of fear at all times as the government or “party” is always watching you. Everyone living a life of pain no matter how much power you contain. The main way to rebel being to fall in love and showing emotions towards people. But in Feed instead of having a lead party bringing fear to everyone, the people in power use the feed. The feed is a chip inside everyones minds that controls each and every one of them. The key difference being that this population loves the feed and can’t stand living without it. To rebel would mean to ignore the feed and not shop or buy any objects the feed is trying to sell to you.
The similarities of the two stories are all based on the fact that the societies are in a totalitarian type of government. Both societies were facing a supposed problem that a group of people stepped up to change and fix. Leaving the people of the towns to be brainwashed to believe that the changes that were made were for the best. Being fed lies so that the people wouldn’t want to rebel and would accept the certain requirements to live in such a society. An example of control from 1984 is Newspeak. Newspeak was changing the vocabulary and dictionary of the people, its purpose being to control the thoughts of the people because most people think in words. If the society was unable to think then they would be unable to feel emotions. As well the same thing happened in Feed, the government controlling or changing the language to control the people of the society. In Feed they make the language much more simple using the words, “Like, Totes, Meg” and more, showing that they don’t have a broad vocabulary. With the vocabulary of the people being very small and not meaningful the people could not be smart. They also prevented from becoming or being smart by changing the ways children were being taught. In schools the governments no longer teach or run the programs, now the corporations run the schools. Instead of teaching old facts and useful information that would make students smarter, they teach the children about how to find great products to buy.

One Page Essay (Trevor & Krislyn)
In both societies there is something or someone who is controlling how you live and what you do. In 1984, a city called Oceania is living a life of a totalitarian society. The citizens of Oceania worship their ruler Big Brother. Big Brother is a dictator that creates the rules, determines the consequences, changes the language you speak and makes you believe whatever he wants you to. The party makes you think that, “War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength” and are hearing that constantly wherever you go until it is stuck in your head. The government places telescreens all around the city watching your every move, waiting to find a reason to turn you in. One day Winston and Julia decide to meet up in the room above the junk shop. When they are looking out the window at the red headed girl outside, the telescreen behind a picture on the wall says to them, “You are the dead.”They also have another resource to keep an eye on you, called the Junior Spies. These young children are trained to favor Big Brother and turn their own parents in. Parsons was one of them. He explains to Winston that his daughter was listening through the key hole and turned them in. Parsons was proud of her because he said that he was getting out of hand and it was better to be turned in before it was too late. In Oceania, people are brainwashed by propaganda that Big Brother forces upon them. They rebel against the government in whatever way they can to escape the boring reality they live in.
Feed is a totalitarian society that is controlled by organizations and their options that they want you to have. The citizens in feed are maintained like 1984. People are kept in control through media by companies and organizations that purchase feed through advertisement, space, classing and the organization of people by personality. Corporations such as feed net own people’s feeds to take control and makes the society fall apart. Victoria comes over to Titus’ house one night to eat and bond with his parents. Titus’ dad asks what was their plans for later. Victoria explains that they were planning to take a stroll in the park. His dad replies that the trees were all cut down and it was turned into an air factory. Victoria was in shock replying that they should not have done that because we need trees to produce oxygen in order to breathe. Most of the society does not think anything of the feed because they have always had it. Since they have always had the feed, they have relied on it to give them information at their fingertips and basically makes their decisions for them. When they do not have hands on the feed they don’t enjoy the life that they are living.
Feed is under the control of organizations, while 1984 is run by the government. We feel that neither of these societies are fully living. People are miserable and brainwashed. In 1984 they are not allowed to love or have thoughts. In feed, their life is opposite, but similar. They can’t think on their own and the only options that they have are limited. Not making decisions on their own it makes us feel that the feed is similar to a robots for the government because the feed only makes choices the government offers them.

Even though both societies are very similar in that they are controlled, they vary in the method and style of control being used. Both societies use a form of control to have an ultimate or greater power that looms over the people. These powers in both stories change basic information as a test of power or to complete a mission of the greater power. In both stories there is a pyramid scheme of power and freedom. They include the greater power or ruling group with the most power and freedom, then the people working for the greater power with limited freedom and little power, and finally everyone else with virtually no power or freedom. Both powers also use words and the destruction of language to manage rebellion and mask expression. In both societies all the citizens that have little to no power are completely under control and are watched at all times. In 1984, they have the thought police and the Telescreens. You cant do anything thats against the government. You cant even think of doing something thats against the government or the rules they set. The thought police will find out if you are thinking something wrong by spotting different movements that you don’t usually do. Everyone the government wants is being watched by Big brother and the all the governments tools. But not everyone in both societies are being watched. Both stories have another class or group of people on the bottom. In 1984 they are the Proletariat and in feed they are just a less fortunate people. They both don’t have enough money or opportunities/resources. In both societies they are thought by the greater power to be useless or not worth it. In Feed everyone with the feed is being watched as well. The companies, organizations, and industries control their thoughts and their feeds. They monitor your messages, thoughts, dreams, goals, and everything in your life. The feed controls your actions by keeping certain thoughts or informing you about things the organizations want you to remember or see. Also it is said to be a limitless resource but you only see what your supposed to find. Both societies have a greater power and are limitlessly controlled.
Even though both societies share the fact of a limitlessly controlling power, each power use different methods in control and result. For 1984 the goal and result of the powers control is just limitless power and an everlasting army of slaves. The difference in method is that in 1984 the government is on top and there is no other place to go. The government and party are the greatest and ultimately great power above everything else. Everything works for the government. The result is the society is falling apart but the government lies to the people because they can control their thoughts. This makes them do what they want and think what they think. The people do this because the government threatens them with torture and pain in the ministry of love. The difference between the societies in this topic is that in feed they promise them good instead of what I said that 1984 threatens them. Feed promises them dictionaries, encyclopedias and limitless capabilities by putting in the feed. In Feed organizations and companies are on top. Industries such as “America Feed” or “Feed net,” control or own the feed and sell advertising space to companies that sell products to make the people by products to pay for ad space and the circle repeats. The government has lost all control and actually is fading away. Feed is a marketing and monopoly Utopia. Instead of power, which is the goal from 1984, the main goal of the industries is money. By making the money they have, they ultimately have gained all the power. I think this is a much better society because everyone is happy. Maybe some being naive or ignorant but still happy. The people work for and pay the companies. Which differs from 1984 where money isn’t much of factor besides that in 1984 money worth has plummeted. So 4 dollars could rent a room for a night. Whereas in feed money has skyrocketed, a pair of really cheep khaki pants would be 150 dollars. In 1894 the government has limitlessly in power and will always be so. Whereas in feed there is still a little freedom. There are many companies with the power so there is still some competition. Yet even though both societies are under control, they differ in the method and style of power and control being used.

Nicole:In both 1984 and Feed, the societies are being controlled in very similar but also different ways. Those in power use different techniques into controlling the citizens. In 1984, people are being controlled by having nothing. This works because they must obtain food, clothes, etc from the government in power. The community of Oceania assumes that the government is making them better by changing history. This way they make sure everyone knows that the chocolate portion for example has increased, although it has not. In Feed, the boundaries are much different that are given to the people. With the Feed, people can make different decisions but are highly influenced by the Feed. The Feed is controlled by companies that suggest products that you might want to buy or words that you could use. People are given a lot more freedom rather than in 1984, where you must think the same as everyone. 1984 is controlled by the government from forcing people into believing what they want them to believe. This way, people feel like the government is on their side, so they cant rebel against the government. If the citizens of Oceania do not realize that they are being tricked into loving the government, then they are perfectly happy. In Feed you believe that there is nothing better then the Feed, and cant imagine living without it. It is a great gift that does not seem to be controlling you when it actually is. The Feed will send you different ads that go with what products you look at and your personality so it knows exactly what you want and will try to make you spend money so the companies will stay in power. Those who rebel against the Feed may do as they like unlike 1984, where you cant rebel because you will be turned in and tortured. Rebels in Feed don’t seem to be a threat to power unlike 1984 because if all the citizens happen to think of rebelling, then it seems possible.
Both 1984 and Feed use technology to trick people. In 1984, telescreens are used in most households to watch the people and to give important news updates. The telescreens help the government to keep the people in order. In the book Feed, Feeds are used in the same way but rather than keeping an eye on you, they give suggestions that are highly recommended from the companies in power. Newspeak is a language restriction that is used in Oceania that allows only happy and good words such as ungood instead of bad, terrible, or horrible. The Feed seems to be very similar with using certain words that have mutliple definitions such as unit or meg. By using language restrictions, you are not thinking as much which means that you wont be able to rebel against the government. Both societies have the different level of classes including the lower class, that receives the least amount of money. In 1984, that is the proles or workers and because they do not have money, the government assumes they are dumb and don’t care that they have no telescreen to watch them. In Feed, the lower class that Victoria is in do not all have Feeds. It seems like those with less can be smarter because they tend to think and realize more without the technology. The companies and governments in power make sure they have nothing to stay in control. Each generation raised by those in control seem to be more brainwashed. Those in Feed and 1984 are taught at a very young age about the love of Big Brother or buying products. People in power take advantage of the new generation for learning.

We are reading two books, one called 1984 and the other called Feed. In these books it is a totalitarian environment. What I mean by totalitarian environment is the society is being completely controlled by the government. In 1984, the big brother or the government was the thing that was taking total control of the society. In feed, it was the feeds that were transplanted into their head. We know what is controlling the societies but how are these two societies being controlled.
In 1984, Big Brother controls the totalitarianism regime. They use things like telescreens and thought police to keep an eye out for any rebellious moves. This society was so controlling that if you rebelled, you were killed and erased from society. Also, if you hated Big Brother, they made you love him using your worst fear against you. They were so controlling that adults own kids would even turn their parents in if they did a rebellious act. In feed, the feed in their brain controls them. Big name companies own the feeds. In our society, it would be companies such as apple. It makes it seem as if it is giving them options in decisions but actually it is only giving them options that help the company.
In 1984, the environment is very depressing and sad and in Feed it is wild and crazy. There are flashing lights and loud music all over the place. In both the societies the living environment was not pleasing to live in. With this, we can infer that if people don’t like the place there living in they will want to change it. So in both books, people rebel against the government. In feed, the people wearing the feeds don’t know they are being controlled. In 1984, they know they are being controlled and learn to love it because of the torture. In Feed, the environment is very bad because of the smoke that the big factories make. Because of all this smoke and pollution, it causes lesions on peoples skin. The big companies that are making all this pollution also own the feeds. With the feeds, they make them think that the lesions are sexy and cool. With this, the people don’t think that the smoke and stuff is causing it.
In conclusion, we have explained how and what is controlling the two societies. In these societies, we can conclude that the control comes from the higher power people but in different methods. These two societies have mastered the totalitarianism government type, by manipulating and controlling the different people that live in the society. The governments force false emotions upon them to make them think it is good.

1984 and Feed 1 page summary Blaine and Reyn
I think that 1984 and feed are very different books that are almost identical in the idea that they are both under control and have advanced technology. The two things that have the people under control are definitely complex machinery that are always monitoring them and what they do, the feeds are guiding them around while the 1984 tele screens monitor them and people tell them where to go and what to do. I think that while they seem different they are the same. For example, if you were driving down a road and a GPs told you to turn right or gave you and example to turn right then you would turn right even though you can go left. Another similarity is that usually the kids in both books did not love their parents. They could easily abandon their parents. While many of the kids are rich and can buy whatever they want they don’t care where the money comes from, they are just happy that the money is coming into their accounts and that they can buy things.
The use of technologies are different in the way they control people. In feed they use a thing called the feed to control you. The feed is planted in your brain and it influences on what you got to do. In 1984, they use a tele screen as there technology to control the people. The tele screen monitors everyone on what they are doing. If you are doing something bad, the people will come and get you. In Feed, they know about the feed but they don’t know how it is affecting them. In 1984, they are kind of aware they are being controlled because they new they were ordered around to do everything. The tele screens couldn’t tell you anything but you always knew they were around so you wouldn’t do anything bad. In feed, it encouraged you more on things you liked and they have no idea there is a feed. In 1984, they do more stuff in secret. For example, when Julia and Winston started there relationship, they were super cautious about they were gonna do because if they got spotted, they would get arrested but they government and tortured. In feed, they were encouraged to do bad things and they would get away with it. For example, they were trying to break open the beer machine. In feed, the kids were kind of spoiled and they didn’t know about there parents. They didn’t have a good bond. In 1984, they had to know everything about there parents and what they were doing and thinking. “…It’s like a spiral: They keep making everything more basic so it will appeal to everyone. And gradually, everyone gets used to everything being basic, so we get less and less varied as people, more simple. I think it means the feeds are controlling how they think about products. Is the technology really the reason why the people are under control, or is it the people?
